How would you pronounce Marisa?

Mar-issa, to rhyme with Melissa.

MrsJohnDeere · 09/03/2012 11:35

The two I know prounce it Ma-rissa,

MrsJohnDeere · 09/03/2012 11:36

Pronounce Blush

Stellan · 09/03/2012 11:41

To rhyme with Melissa, Clarissa, Nerissa, etc.

rachel234 · 09/03/2012 12:48

I'd say Mar-eesa, definately.

It has one 's' (unlike Melissa).

mayanna123 · 09/03/2012 12:50

Marisa -> Mar-ees-a
Marissa -> Mar-iss-a

FilterCoffee · 09/03/2012 14:10

I'd pronounce them both Ma-rissa.

Pudgy2011 · 09/03/2012 14:14

My aunt is Marise and we pronounce it Mar-eese.

I love the name but I'm biased - will use it as a middle name if I have a baby girl.

winkle2 · 09/03/2012 15:41

pudgy where is your aunt from? As Marise doesnt sound like an english name.

OP posts:
Marmite2012 · 09/03/2012 16:26

Ma-ris-ah

threeleftfeet · 09/03/2012 21:14

Mar-issa, definitely. I have a lovely friend with this name :)

Pudgy2011 · 09/03/2012 21:30

winkle my mum's family are Anglo-Indian and grew up in Borneo but I'm not sure how much of a bearing that had. My mum's name is Lenore but my uncles all have relatively "normal" names - my sister's middle name is Marise so if I have a dd, she will have it has her middle name as well.

Kindling · 10/03/2012 22:10

I knew an italian Marisa pronounced Ma-ree-sa.

Pronounced Marissa it sounds a bit made up / me.

Kindling · 10/03/2012 22:11

Whoops meant to say, made up / californian to me

winkle2 · 10/03/2012 23:27

I really like the pronunciation Mareesa :)

RoxyRobin · 10/03/2012 23:32

With Kindling on this. There was an Italian girl at my school called Marisa - it was pronounced Ma-ree-sa.

exexpat · 10/03/2012 23:43

Only Marisa I know pronounced it Mar-issa. Her family was originally Spanish. Maybe there are Spanish/Italian variants?

Anonymumous · 11/03/2012 20:05

I would definitely say:

Marisa = Ma-ree-sa (like Lisa)
Marissa = Ma-riss-a (like Clarissa)

I have a Marissa so I'm biased and love the name. I've already had it spelt wrong so many times Marisa, Marrisa, Melissa and she's only 1 but no regrets!
I also like Marisa which I'd pronounce Mareesa, go for it Grin

shoobidoo · 12/03/2012 13:51

Marisa/Lisa = Mar-ees-a

Marissa/Clarissa = Mar-iss-a

I'm surprised that there would be any confusion, seems obvious to me [confusion].

pootlebug · 13/03/2012 10:44

I went to school with a Marisa. Everyone automatically defaulted to 'Mar-iss-a' and she went around all the time going 'It's Mar-ees-a'. So whether it seems obvious or not that a single 's' means it rhymes with Lisa it wasn't obvious at all to her classmates or teachers.

burcham12 · 13/03/2012 12:33

Met a Marisa last week; she pronounced her name Mar-EES-a.
