It's a diminutive (pet) form of the name Sarah. However it has been used as a stand-alone name since the start of the 20th century... see here

DH's Granny was Sadie, as it is, not a nn for anything. She was born in 1912.

Not sure if it short for anything. But I always see the name as SAD-ie, I'm afraid.

Not keen as it being used as a name in its own right, it's too "twee" for me, but it's fine as a nn for Sarah.

My MIL's old nanny was a Sadie. She was an African American born around 1900. Wanted it for DD but it rhymes with my name and nearly does with DH's too. Would've been a bit much. But I do love it.

I hated it, thought it was a bit meh until I watched Birth Stories on Home and Health about four months ago and the pregnant lady had a gorgeous little blonde Sadie, who was an absolute dote. So now I have changed my mind and think its glorious :)
