Is it short for anything?

It's a diminutive (pet) form of the name Sarah. However it has been used as a stand-alone name since the start of the 20th century... see here

DH's Granny was Sadie, as it is, not a nn for anything. She was born in 1912.

hellymelly · 08/03/2012 23:18

Actually I am wrong,DH has just told me that it was a nn for Sarah in fact.

GavisonandOn · 09/03/2012 08:11

I like it.

chandellina · 09/03/2012 11:16

I love it but DH nixed it. Had to go for another Beatles song name instead.

MrsJohnDeere · 09/03/2012 11:37

Nice name

rachel234 · 09/03/2012 12:20

Not sure if it short for anything. But I always see the name as SAD-ie, I'm afraid.

ButterPecanMuffin · 09/03/2012 12:23

Not keen as it being used as a name in its own right, it's too "twee" for me, but it's fine as a nn for Sarah.

LouMacca · 09/03/2012 12:31

Love Sadie!!

Janoschi · 09/03/2012 22:18

My MIL's old nanny was a Sadie. She was an African American born around 1900. Wanted it for DD but it rhymes with my name and nearly does with DH's too. Would've been a bit much. But I do love it.

PercyFilth · 09/03/2012 22:51

I like the sound of it, but it's uncomfortably close to Sadist.

threeleftfeet · 10/03/2012 00:06

My Grandmother's name was Sadie, it wasn't a NN.

I hated it, thought it was a bit meh until I watched Birth Stories on Home and Health about four months ago and the pregnant lady had a gorgeous little blonde Sadie, who was an absolute dote. So now I have changed my mind and think its glorious :)
