Came across a name today that I'd never heard before and I think I've fallen for it!

It's Ayelet.

What do you think? Would probably pronounce it Eye-leht. So I suppose it'd be like a mixture of Isla and Violet. I think it is very pretty and unique without being too unusual, but would love some opinions please and thank you! x

Hmm Isn't it the hole you thread your shoe lace through?

Sparklingbrook · 02/03/2012 19:37

That's an aglet crystal. Grin

I'm not keen there. Sorry.

maxpower · 02/03/2012 19:38

isn't that what you put a lace through? (sorry!)

I'm not keen tbh but I tend to prefer more 'traditional' names. Bottom line though it's your baby call her what you want Smile

Sparklingbrook · 02/03/2012 19:38

Oh no, an eyelet is what you put the lace through, the aglet is on the end of the lace. Silly me.

EBDteacher · 02/03/2012 19:38

Makes me think of the holes you use to hang curtains?

Really, honestly.... to me it sounds like the holes that you thread the curtain rings through. Sorry. I do like the sound of it though.

How about Ailish? (Pronounced A-lish) Genuine Scottish girl's name, which I think is beautiful, and kind of in the same vein?

mumatron · 02/03/2012 19:39

Isn't that like a hole? for shoelaces or some such?

maxpower · 02/03/2012 19:40

A small grommet may also be called an eyelet, used on shoes for lacing purposes

rubyslippers · 02/03/2012 19:40

It's a Hebrew name isn't it?

Eye-el-et

I like it

therewasalittlegirl · 02/03/2012 19:54

Thank you all :) I expected the eyelet comments, but that doesn't really put me off, hmmm maybe it should..

Yes I think it can be pronounced with 3 syllables ruby thanks. I just think it would end up being said with the 2!

I've googled it, and apparently Ayelet Zurer was in Angels and Demons and Ayelet Waldman is an author. So it's not totally unheard of. I really like the sound and it does go nice with our surname... but I do care what others think even though I shouldn't hmmm. Oh and for what it's worth, DH actually likes it! Shock

I thought "eyelet" as well. And so will everyone else who hears the name for the first time.

Thinking of names which have similar sounds in, why not go for Violet, Iona, Ianthe, Collette, or Aisling instead?

MrsSchadenfreude · 02/03/2012 20:11

Yes, Hebrew name - eye-el-et. Might sound a bit odd if you are not Israeli or Jewish though. I quite like it. It beats Hagit, anyway.

Petrean · 02/03/2012 20:12

Makes me think of eyelet curtains.

BeckyBrandonNeeBloomwood · 02/03/2012 20:22

My first thought was eyelet however I do quite like it. But violet is one of my top names so maybe thats why!
If you and other half love it then why not? Sod everyone else! X

Purplehonesty · 02/03/2012 20:22

I Like but I think she might go through life telling folk her name and them saying "violet?" and her going "no Angry..."

nkf · 02/03/2012 20:23

I'd say it's unusual. And not that pretty.

therewasalittlegirl · 02/03/2012 20:26

Pronounced with 3 syllables, which one is emphasised please?

And would it really be odd as we're not Jewish or Israeli? Any more weird than Hannah, Rachel, Naomi etc? Are they not Jewish names?

OP posts:
Doodlegoogle · 02/03/2012 20:26

I definitely prefer the 3 syllable version as the eyelet-ness is too much for me with 2 syllables. I think most people will get over the eyelet thing quite quickly once they get used to how it sounds.

On balance I think its really pretty. It might go on my list...

TidyDancer · 02/03/2012 20:32

I don't personally like it tbh. Made me think immediately of eyelet. One of those try-too-hard names for me.

Stellan · 02/03/2012 20:34

Nameberry.com suggests it's pronounced eye-YELL-it or EYE-leht but apparently a three-syllable sound ? ah yeh let ? is favored by most name dictionaries. It looks a bit like Violet so it seems more likely that eye YELL it, or EYE leht would be the ones you're most likely to hear.

therewasalittlegirl · 02/03/2012 20:46

Thanks Stellan

I'm struggling to pronounce eye-YELL-it out loud, and I'm not sure why! I'm trying to think of a name with the same rhythm, can anyone help? For example, Tabitha has the same rhythm as Jessica (stress on the 1st).... Blush

Horrible, sorry.

GreenEyedMunster · 02/03/2012 22:31

Ehm. Just no.

picnicbasketcase · 02/03/2012 22:34

It sounds okayish but looks horrible written down, IYSWIM. Isla and Violet are both far nicer.
