Laura, too safe and boring?

Anyone who searches my previous threads will know I'm giving this girls name thing far too much thought!

So the latest list is

Laura - I think it's reasonably unusual for a baby < waits to be corrected > but although it's lovely, it smacks of safe and boring!

Susannah - To be shortened to Susie most likely. I like it. I'm not sure whether I love it or not Confused

Elsa - what if she becomes Ellie? (which I don't really like) or she gets called Elephant or something < playground taunts coming back to haunt me >

Tell me how great one of the names are and sway me! Grin TIA!

No, no, no. You are all WRONG!!! My name is Laura and it is boring, boring, boring - I hate it! Do not inflict it on anybody else, please! It doesn't even have an interesting meaning. It is as dull and safe and boring as you can get. (I'm a Laura Grace too - my family's saying was 'Laura Grace with the dirty face'. Yup, thanks for that, Mum.)

Laura the Borer.

Beans and anony

Are you related? It's a small world, you know Grin

Anonymumous · 02/03/2012 17:23

'Fraid not, Asinine - the chances of my brother describing me as his 'gorgeous younger sister' are about as remote as Kerry Katona describing the Queen as her long-lost real Mum!

Kaekae · 02/03/2012 17:37

It is rather dull IMO, I would go for Lara instead.

Asinine · 02/03/2012 17:39

Anon Grin

ViolaCrayola · 02/03/2012 17:48

In my age group- late twenties- Laura is v v common. But I agree it's not used for babies much nowadays.
Of all your names I like Susie best.

marshmallowpies · 02/03/2012 20:41

I love Laura as it's the name of one of my favourite childhood authors, Laura Ingalls Wilder.

It was on the shortlist for DD for a while but DH decided he had gone off it. Still think it's a lovely name.

nkf · 02/03/2012 20:41

It's pretty. Not dull at all. I don't think so.

Letchladee · 02/03/2012 22:09

I like both Laura and Susannah - although both are my children's middle names.

Sorry, I also thought Lion when I heard Elsa.

My DD2 has one Laura in her class, but that is the only child Laura I know. Its not at all common these days. My DD is a Katherine - but is only one of 2 Katherines at her school. Names we considered unusual, like Isabel, Maddie, Emilia seem two a penny though. Yes, very common names for our age group, but not for our children's.

neolara · 02/03/2012 22:13

I like Laura. What about Lara? It's a bit less safe IMO.

PoultryInMotion · 03/03/2012 07:21

Thank you all for the input. Yes Laura was fairly popular in my generation (I'm nearly 27) so I figured their wouldn't be many as they are the mothers names!

I'm pre-born free so it didn't occur to me but yes I've had a few people say Elsa was a lion Grin

I suggested Lara to DH but he says he thinks 'Croft' I think it's nice though.

I'm a Laura and I've always loved my name Grin

chocoroo · 03/03/2012 08:06

I'm a Laura, in mu thirties and it's very common (and therefore dull) for my age group. I lived with 3 other Laura's in mu first year at uni.

But for a baby, I think it could work. I like Sarah for the same reason.

ragged · 03/03/2012 08:16

Can't say I prefer Lara, either.
All lovely names, OP. You can't go wrong. Makes a nice change from the ubiquitous Freya-Ruby-Isobel-Evie-Jessica-Lauren hordes (I unimaginatively have one of those, too).

Ineedadollar · 03/03/2012 08:17

Laura is lovely.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2012 16:50

I like Laura and have only good associations with the name (went to school with two, born in the 60s), but I prefer Laurel.

SayBoo · 03/03/2012 18:38

Laura is lovely

Flowerface · 05/03/2012 19:13

I am a Laura and I have an Elsa.

When I was growing up I thought Laura was dead boring because of the absence of nickname potential, but now I like it, and think that might be an advantage!

I never thought the Born Free association was a reason not to use a name...

But I really like Laurel too.

ViolaCrayola · 05/03/2012 20:10

Just to show that ANY name can have multiple nicknames - here are some of the things we called our friends who were named Laura:

Laus
Lozenge
Lolly
Lausy
Lau (pronounced Law)
Lo lo
Laura Paura

None of them bad, and maybe not really proper nicknames - but there you are :)
Anyway, Laura is a nice name - and certainly unusual for a baby.

KatieScarlett2833 · 05/03/2012 20:13

I have a Laura

HandMadeTail · 05/03/2012 20:21

If you think Laura is too boring, perhaps you could choose a more outlandish unusual name as a middle name. An animal name perhaps. What about Aardvark?
