Morning all!

So DH has agreed Heidi for first name (my choice) :)

So now onto middle name. Has to be Irish as DH is Irish as our other two girls have Irish names. Last night he came up with Ailise, with a fada thingy over the second i.

I did a google and just came up with meaning of Noble and that it's irish form of Alice/Alicia... It is pronounced ah-leesh-a, unless anyone thinks otherwise?

So anyone heard of this name used in Ireland?

Thanks ladies!

Hmm , have to admit I've never heard of Ailíse. Although if that's how it's spelt your pronunciation would be correct.

Sometimes certain names are Irish-ified. Traditional names such as Alice which don?t exist in Irish are given a Gaelic spelling making them seem more trad Irish. Maybe Ailíse is an example of this.

A name I am familiar with and which has a similar sound is Laoise, pronounced Leesha.

I'm Irish and I would say the name is Ailísh. Pronounced Aaleesh.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 02/03/2012 11:40

I've never heard of it, only Ailish.

ilooklikegrotbagstoday · 02/03/2012 11:41

I immediately thought of Ailish too.

babyblabber · 02/03/2012 12:05

yeah have never heard of Ailise, only Ailish of Laoise. Or what about Aisling which means dream?

FilterCoffee · 02/03/2012 12:17

Same here, have met an Ailish (pronounced Ay-lish) but never an Ailise.

Aisling a lovely suggestion too.

Bigteadrinker · 02/03/2012 12:37

Brilliant, thanks girls. Will run past dh tonight. I like Laoise too. He is umming and ahhing about Aisling because one of our neices is Aishling... I dont think its an issue if its only a second name, but he's not sure, ultimately that is his fave name of all time! I am not convinced Ailise is a real name now!

I'm also with those who've only ever come across Ailish and its variants (which is lovely) - Ailíse sounds like a newly-Gaelicised version of Alice or Alicia, and slightly made up, to me.

FilterCoffee · 04/03/2012 11:02

Laoise.... umm, won't you get people who think it's pronounced "louse"?

SayBoo · 04/03/2012 11:05

I know two girls called Ailise (Aleesha) - am Irish, if that helps.

Aisling is gorgeous.

Bigteadrinker · 06/03/2012 10:31

Very Good point filtercoffee... I am not Irish but been with DH for 10 years so can pretty much pronounce all Irish names, they dont look funny to me. Its good to know that is how you might see it.

SayBoo - good to hear it has actually been used! I think we have to decide between Ailise, Ailish or Aisling.... Or.... Im making up a new one Alaoise!!!

It is only a second name though, so not overly worried....

I'm Irish, and I've not heard of it but I do agree that more names are definitely being "irish-ised".

I love the name Laoise.. but my all time favourite (should I have a girl) is Saoirse which the OH and IL's struggle to pronounce shakes fist
