Hey, what about Daphne? (Or Persephone probably)

I woke up at 3am, seized my sleeping husband by the shoulders and shrieked "What about Daphne??!!"

It still seems like a reasonable idea in the cold light of morning.

Whaddyathink?

I suppose she would be known as Daf or Daffy which isn't very elegant.

It's either that or Persephone.

I wish I could find a girls name I adore as much as our boys name.

PS - What nicknames are used for Persephone?

I quite like Daphne! She'd certainly be the only one in the class.
Not sure about Persephone, though.

Rhubarbgarden · 02/03/2012 07:33

I like Daphne. Persephone is too fussy for me personally.

MarjorieAntrobus · 02/03/2012 07:48

They are both good, and v unusual. Persephone isn't all that far away (aurally) from Penelope, which is less uncommon.

I bet Persephone would be shortened to Perse, Seph, Sephy, Saf, Saffy. They'd be quite acceptable I think.

Go for it!

mrswoodentop · 02/03/2012 07:53

Prefer Persephone, the nick name is Percie usually I think as per the character in the current series of upstairs downstairs, don't like Daphne

Greenwing · 02/03/2012 09:29

Lady Persephone is the name of the Nazi sympathiser in the new 'Upstairs Downstairs' (Series 2 now on) - so more people will have heard of it now.
They call her Lady Percy (Persy/Persie?)

Daphne is great!

I love Persephone but it's not really usable I fear.

mawbroon · 02/03/2012 09:42

Daphne Broon.

don't do it

nizlopi · 02/03/2012 10:32

I love the name Daphne :)

SylvieSmith · 02/03/2012 10:51

I like Daphne and Persephone. I think they might just work, particularly Daphne. You may also like Evadne.

CuttedUpPear · 02/03/2012 10:54

Persephone is awful. I knew one once, poor child. Yes everyone pronounces it Percy Phone and it has a bad background.

Daphne, yes.

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 02/03/2012 10:57

My Mum was Daphne Grin

LiteraryMermaid · 02/03/2012 11:47

I like Daphne. It's cute and quirky, but would also work on an adult. Seems to have become more usable than it was a few years ago. Possible downside: the lack of a decent nickname (that I can think of - not Daffy/Daff!) and the fact that, like Persephone, it also has a rather sad mythology behind it.

I sort of like Persephone too because it sounds so romantic, and Sephy is a lovely shortening, but I think the pronunciation issues would make it difficult. I'm a teacher, and I think she'd have to put up with being Percy-phone at school for the first few years at least (to some staff as well as other children, I'd imagine!)

How about Xanthe? Less of a pronunciation problem there once you get past the x/z thing!

misslinnet · 02/03/2012 11:59

I liked Persephone when we were thinking about names, but DH kept saying, "What? But it's pronounced Percy-Phone!"

Bigteadrinker · 02/03/2012 12:52

Persephone is wrong. Bit like Hermione.

Daphne is only slightly better, it is different. Think it sounds a bit like daft though.

RnB · 02/03/2012 13:26

Daphne is beautiful

FilterCoffee · 02/03/2012 13:42

I like the name Daphne.

Persephone a bit OTT.

SilentBoob · 02/03/2012 15:41

You know, I really don't think people would pronounce it Percy-phone. And if they did you'd only have to correct them once.

I think... that Daphne is a better full name than Persephone, but that Persi is a MUCH better nickname than Daffy. And we're quite a nicknamey family.

I do so love the idea of a little girl called Persi.

I take on board comments about Persephone being fussy / OTT, but again an OTT name would fit in my family...

Oh this is so hard.

They are both vile.

You cannot POSSIBLY call a child Persephone. Would you like to introduce yourself as that at your first day at work, or in the pub, or on a date? Thought not.

oikopolis · 02/03/2012 16:21

Daphne is OK. Pretty in theory, but you do have the whole "daffy duck" thing, i don't know about that.

Persephone is dreadful. Horrid myth, kidnapping and rape and forced marriage and mother roaming earth in despair while crops die in the fields etc. etc. The Greeks tended not even to name Persephone, they called her Kore ("the maiden") as a euphemism because she was queen of the underworld and a harbinger of destruction and misery. No thanks!

Plus, she will get called Percy-phone, and people will make a joke out of it. Percy is a dreadful nickname too, imo.

squoosh · 02/03/2012 16:22

Perspehone is waaay over the top for my taste. I'd be embarassed calling out across a park,'Persephone, your dinner's ready'.

And I've always thought Daphne is a very floppy name if that makes any sense. It's just a bit feeble, a Daphne would be no good in a crisis. (Apologies to all the Daphnes who work for the Red Cross)

HettyKett · 02/03/2012 16:24

Fee is a much nicer nn for Daphne than Daffy

Kayzr · 02/03/2012 16:24

I love both. I also think Persi would be a really cool nickname.

I prefer Daphne but due to DS1s name we can't use it.

PercyFilth · 02/03/2012 19:06

There is a Persis in the Bible, now there's one you don't hear very often. Would that do? Easy to pronounce and spell. There was a beautiful actress called Persis Khambatta.

maddiemostmerry · 02/03/2012 19:14

I love Daphne. I really wanted to be Scooby Doo DaphneGrin

Agree with the percy phone comments.

How about Seraphina?
