I STILL can't decide on a girl's name...

I am starting to think that I just don't like any names...

We have been through the Core/Dora/Clara thing and I think I am kind of over those now.

At the moment I am thinking:

Helena (is the pronunciation thing going to be too annoying?)
Harriet (I like it. But yesterday I got it into my head that it sounds like 'harried', which has slighly put me off)
Lucinda (but a friend has just called her daughter 'Lucia' and I worry I am copying her because I have no ideas of my own)

I also recently thought of Adela (NN Della) or Belinda (NN Bella. I quite like the Enid Blytonish associations of this. But does it make you think of a fat middle aged lady?)

I feel utterly incapable of making a decision. Please help! DD is called Elsa MN Rose.

Like Harriet and Lucinda. Elsa is gorgeous too!

anewmotivatedme · 01/03/2012 12:09

love Helena

I particularly like Helena - lovely name. I think most people would know it to pronounce it either as Helen-a or He-lay-na; you would only need to correct them once if they got it wrong. If you introduced yourself as Helena - whichever pronunciation - the person you were speaking to would be able to spell it easily. I wouldn't let the pronunciation variation put you off. Elsa Rose and Helena sound like great sibling names to me.

Harriet is really nice too, as is Lucinda. Considering all the Lucias and Lucys though, you might find it's not distinctive enough in the classroom (particularly if your daughter is nicknamed Lucy/Luce). I'm personally not convinced by Adela (not keen on the nickname and Adele - the popstar - is everywhere at the moment) or Belinda but there's nothing wrong with either name: good, solid choices.

You might also like

Elsa & Martha
Elsa & Lydia
Elsa & Camilla
Elsa & Juliet
Elsa & Florence
Elsa & Felicity

Flowerface · 01/03/2012 13:15

Thanks. We did think about Martha but it seems quite popular round here. For a long time we wanted Lydia for DD but I was eventually put off by the thought of my grandfather saying 'Lid-a-ya teapot'! 'F' names are problematic because of our surname.

I do really like Helena, I just feel it's a bit long and unwieldy, but perhaps I am being ridiculous.

I like Helena and I like Felicity, I like Flora and I like Lydia. I don't like Belinda.
I also like Anna and Ellen if that's any help.

SecondhandRose · 01/03/2012 22:06

Annie is due for a come back.

Crazytictac · 01/03/2012 22:50

Love Helena. Agree with what stellan said.

Also like Lucinda from your list and I'm afraid I do know what you mean about the Belinda association?

Hmm, what about Louisa?

Flowerface · 02/03/2012 08:44

Like Lousia a lot but DH doesn't, for some reason.

I didn't really want anything beginning with a vowel (e.g. Anna) as I thought it might be awkward with Elsa.

Dd was nearly a Helena. It's the only 'long' name I like because it manages it without sounding fussy - it's just elegant and classy. I also love Harriet.

squoosh · 02/03/2012 11:07

Helena - lovely

Lucinda - ok

Harriet - big fat no. It is practically at the top of my 'most unattractive names of all times' list.

Elsa - lovely

LiteraryMermaid · 02/03/2012 12:14

Helena is definitely my favourite of these. Don't think the pronunciation issue would be too problematic - agree with Stellan on this. Goes well with Elsa.

Harriet is OK. Dislike Lucinda - sounds too Sloaney and a bit prissy to me. Not a huge fan of either Adela or Belinda - and the former could possibly be seen as a bit of a homage to the singer!

Elsa is a fabulous name, and I think Helena best lives up to it. Or:

Elsa and Claudia
Elsa and Greta
Elsa and Tabitha
Elsa and Verity
Elsa and Tess
Elsa and Honor

BlueChampagne · 02/03/2012 13:12

Helena is my favourite from your first 4. People will soon learn how you like it pronounced. I also like Belinda and Corinna.

Flowerface · 02/03/2012 13:18

Great suggestions. I LOVE Claudia, Literary but DH is violently opposed. We also thought about Greta. I suspect DH would say that Tabitha is too posh.

By far the nicest you've mentioned is Anna - two vowels aren't a problem at all, why would they be?

Go for Anna, it is beautiful.
