Penelope by a long way!

othersideofchannel · 28/02/2012 15:16

Both are lovely!

squoosh · 28/02/2012 15:24

Deliliah is lovely but I'm not sure I could saddle my child with a lifetime of having That Song sung at her. And people will. They will also think they're the first person to have done this.

See also Gloria and Cecilia.

Penelope doesn't thrill me in any way.

LaFilleSurLePont · 28/02/2012 16:35

Penelope is lovely. I'm not really a fan of Delilah.

FilterCoffee · 28/02/2012 17:10

Both lovely but I prefer Delilah (and nickname Della is nice too).

Minty82 · 28/02/2012 17:46

I love Delilah, but the biblical one wasn't very nice, so I tend to think of it in the same unusable category as Jezebel or Herod!

LetsKateWin · 28/02/2012 17:47

Penelope

misslinnet · 28/02/2012 17:48

Penelope

Anonymumous · 28/02/2012 18:15

I prefer Delilah. The song thing is a red herring. There are loads of names used in songs - I always used to get 'Tell Laura I love her'. Penelope would be just as likely to get Penny Lane sung at her!

Delilah is just more 'alive' than Penelope somehow.

thegreylady · 28/02/2012 18:35

I have a Portugese friend named Dalila which I prefer [Da-leela] she is called Dal.I do prefer Penelope with a choice of nn-Nell or Penny

mirpuppet · 28/02/2012 18:37

Penelope

ShowOfHands · 28/02/2012 18:42

My niece is Delilah and it does get mixed reactions. My Grandma and other relatives of that age are horrified that she's named after a biblical whore (and I quote).

Penelope is very pretty indeed.

crochetcircle · 28/02/2012 19:34

Penelope is lovely but I am biased as it is DD's middle name!

madaboutmadmen · 28/02/2012 20:33

Go to a pub full of Welsh rugby fans before a game and that will put you off calling your daughter Delilah as shed loads of drunk men and women belt out the Tom Jones song about a the woman who was murdered her husband.....

madaboutmadmen · 28/02/2012 20:33

*murdered by her husband

GlassOfPort · 28/02/2012 20:40

Penelope, definitely.

GossipMonger · 28/02/2012 20:41

I would not want to be called either of those names.

Penny if my life depended on it!

Chocaholics · 28/02/2012 20:44

Penelope is a lovely name, was my favourite name for DD but DH point blank refused. Still love it though and if we have another daughter I'm going to try and persuade him! Love Penny as a nn too.

oikopolis · 28/02/2012 21:03

Calling a girl Delilah is, imo, like calling a boy Herod. Delilah was a baddie who met a horrid end in the Bible, which is a central text of Western culture.

Penelope is lovelier and was a much more appealing character in the Odyssey, which is also a central text of Western culture!

Not everyone cares about such things but it's certainly the first thing I think of. i always feel very sorry for the small Delilahs that i meet irl.

nooka · 29/02/2012 05:19

Penelope (and Penny). I think that Delilah is either a bit comedy (my my my Delilah) or biblical in the wrong way. I wouldn't call a child Jonah either.

QueenKong · 29/02/2012 07:22

DS would have been Penelope. I love it, so pretty and classy with great nn potential. I especially like Nellie for a tot.

diddl · 29/02/2012 07:54

Delilah.

DilysPrice · 29/02/2012 08:01

Delilah has two main reference points, the Bible and that song, and both of them are decidedly ill-starred so I'd rule that out.

flopsy1974 · 29/02/2012 09:11

Penelope Smile not keen on Delilah at all.

justwantcheese · 01/03/2012 08:24

thanks i am now swinging from delilah to penelope as i do like nell for a nn.
