Help us get some perspective on our shortlist with our comedy surname please!

We have a comedy surname. It's a noun and is something that footballers kick! As you can imagine we've had to discard a number of names as they just don't work. We've decide on a boy's name but are stuck with girls names. Our shortlist in order of preference is:

Molly
Thea
Jessica

Do the above work with our surname? I'd appreciate all points of view and any other suggestions. Thanks.

And another vote for Jessica here. It's lovely.

abbypumpkin · 06/03/2012 14:32

Not Molly. jessica from your list

lurkinginthebackground · 06/03/2012 17:10

Molly sounds wrong. Jessica sounds the best from your list.

Itwasonastarrymole · 06/03/2012 17:17

I like how the OP was careful not to mention her last name, and everyone has done it for her Wink I knew three sisters with that surname: Georgia, Natasha, and Emily.

chickensaregreen · 06/03/2012 17:21

Thea is lovely but might sound like Theobald.

QuickLookBusy · 06/03/2012 17:24

Don't think Molly or Thea work.

Jessica is the best but if it was shortened Jess Ball doesn't look good.

rebecklet · 06/03/2012 17:25

I think the only one that works is Jessica which is lovely. I agree with chickensaregreen when I saw Thea, I thought Theobald Hmm

StealthNinja · 07/03/2012 02:39

I love the name Thea.

Eloise, Romilly, Natalia, Naomi, Josephine?

caulicheese · 21/03/2012 04:01

Thanks everyone for your replies, it's been helpful. Molly seems to be out and Jessica the best option so far. We have now come up with a couple more names but would like to run them past you all again in case weve missed something. (Didn't notice the Molly/ volley similarity for instance!)They are
Beatrice
Lily

Do these sound ok with aforementioned comedy surname? Ta!

OP posts:
DharmaBumpkin · 21/03/2012 04:19

A lot of Beatrice's end up being nicknamed Bee, & personally I wouldn't go for 'b ball'!

Am not a huge fan of Lily, mainly as I know about 7 under-fives.

I like Jessica still...

Stellan · 21/03/2012 09:45

Beatrice is lovely but, for me, the potential nickname of B(ea) Ball would be a dealbreaker.

As with Molly, there are two many L sounds in Lily Ball. Personally, I think it's a bit of a tonguetwister! Try saying it quickly and it sort of blends into one name - Lilyball. It's also very popular.

That's why Jessica works - it's a longer name that doesn't repeat any of the sounds in Ball.

Avoid any nouns or colour names as first names - e.g. Ruby, Summer, Scarlett, etc.

You seem to like fairly traditional/popular names so you might like:
Alice Ball
Charlotte Ball
Claudia Ball
Eleanor Ball
Felicity Ball
Florence Ball
Jemima Ball
Joanna Ball
Louisa Ball
Martha Ball
Matilda Ball
Megan Ball
Miriam Ball
Naomi Ball
Rachel Ball
Rebecca Ball (although Becky Ball might be a bit twee)
Rosa Ball
Sarah Ball
Sophie Ball
Victoria Ball

One of my favourite names in Jessamine, which I think you might like too:

www.behindthename.com/name/jessamine

It's really uncommon (but familiar-looking and sounding). I pronounce it JES-eh-min although jes-eh-MEEN would work too. Nice spin on Jessica and Jasmine. What do you think?

Aworryingtrend · 21/03/2012 09:58

Jessica definitely works best. Not keen on the alliteration Beatrice gives or the sound of Lily+ your surname together.

Littlecherublegs · 22/03/2012 12:35

Definitely Jessica from your list. Dont like the alliteration with Beatrice.
What about Lilia or Lilian?

I think a 3 syllable name sounds best:
Sophia
Francesca
Naomi
Caroline
Dominique
Emily
Matilda

seeker · 22/03/2012 12:41

I read that as something footballer's lick and my mind was going into overdrive!

Molly won't work- too like volley.

Jessica's the best, I think.

LiteraryMermaid · 22/03/2012 19:36

I have to say I'm not a big fan of Jessica, but it definitely goes best with your surname. Molly Ball sounds too much like 'malleable' (and volleyball!) and Thea Ball also sounds like it could be an adjective. Reckon a longer name is probably best with a short surname like Ball.

ellangirl · 22/03/2012 20:53

Stellar def agree with no colour names, Scarlett ball? Violet ball? Snigger!

ellangirl · 22/03/2012 20:53

stellan sorry-silly autocorrect

CantSleepWontSleep · 22/03/2012 21:12

Am going with the concensus and preferring Jessica, but how about Philippa as an alternative?

StarterForTen · 22/03/2012 22:16

Molly soundslike Holly Ball, sorry.

I would got three syllables - Jennifer, Josephine, Penelope (whoops four)

CantSleepWontSleep · 22/03/2012 22:30

Not Josephine - Jo Ball too much like dough ball!
