Hey what do you all think of Finlay with James as a middle name?

Expecting DS1 In 9 weeks and am totally stumped for names!

Thanks Hayley x

Really lovely! Finlay is fairly popular at the moment but names are popular for a reason, because its a lovely name :o

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 24/02/2012 23:09

I love Finlay, but it is very popular so he's likely to be one of several at school.

justhayley · 24/02/2012 23:17

Ooo didn't no it was popular - mind you I don't know any baby boys - all my friends have girls.
I like it but and this may sound weird but think it sounds like a blonde baby's name, me & my DP have dark hair so I'm
Sure our baby will as well. I really like the name but picture a blonde boy wearing stripped dungarees - yep I'm loosing the plot lol.
How popular is Finlay at the moment? Is it top 10?

I quite like it (unusual for me to like a name on MN Grin).
I go into a lot of Nurseries as part of my job, and haven't come across any Finlays.

bettyboo83 · 24/02/2012 23:32

That's lovely. My DS has James as his middle name. We couldn't have Finlay though as our surname is Mills and it's a bit of a mouthful!

CrystalTits · 24/02/2012 23:43

You don't sound weird justhayley - Finlay means 'fair-haired warrior' :)

I thought my DS would be dark haired too but he's still a blonde Finlay at nearly 11 yrs old. Great name with cool abbreviations. Go for it!

edam · 24/02/2012 23:50

Nice names, both very popular.

justhayley · 24/02/2012 23:53

Lol at crystal I literally just looked it up - guess being pregnant hasn't mushed my brain as much as I thought lol.

Thanks for all the replys - Iv never had nice comments when starting a name thread on here lol maybe this one is a keeper Grin

Fin/Finn names are very popular round here these days.

mayanna123 · 25/02/2012 13:08

Finley/Finlay must be one of the most used boys names currently and James one of the most popular middle names. Yes, they sound fine together, but your ds will probably have to share his name with many others (especially if you have a common surname).

Personally I find all the Fin/Finn names overused.

PieMistress · 25/02/2012 14:22

I love it, sadly because of DP's surname we can't use any names beginning with 'F' so bang goes all my favourites! (Finlay, Fergal, Fergus, Freya, Faith & Frank!)

curiousgeorgie · 25/02/2012 16:35

It is really popular...

I know one Finlay James and one Finley James...

And two Finns. (Middle name not james :))

birdofthenorth · 25/02/2012 17:45

Nice names but all bar one of the baby boys I know born in the last year had James as a middle name. I think it sounds lovely after most first names but has become a bit ubiquitous as a result! Sorry. Nothing wrong with following the trend if you love it, they are very nice names, hence the popularity!

MrsBovary · 25/02/2012 18:19

It sounds pleasant enough. Nice choice.

justhayley · 25/02/2012 18:28

God it really is popular - think this puts me off slightly to be honest Sad also wasn't aware james was popular for a middle name - in fact I thought it was an old persons name lol we like it as we both have relatives (grandad and great uncle) who's names are James.
I'm not around children yet so have no idea what everyone's naming their babies. People I no who have had boys have literally only called them either Oliver or Alfie! I like Oliver but wouldn't use it because of how overused it is with people I know!
I'm not after anything super original but don't want him to be the 3rd Finlay James in his class! God this naming business is tuff - there are so many beautiful girls name, think I would have found it sooooo much easier naming a daughter!

I think it's a lovely name. I think that if "James" has a family link you should use it (you can't choose your family after all!) and Finley is great, who knows who he'll be going to school with in a few years?

MrsAmaretto · 25/02/2012 19:26

Sorry - Finlay!

PieMistress · 25/02/2012 19:58

I think no matter what name you chose there is a possibility of somebody else in DC's class at school having the same name. Although admittedly i'm a bit mwahhh that there is another Kyle in the village and the same age as my DS!

greencat23 · 25/02/2012 20:35

sorry dont like finlay find it a bit faddy imo, i do love James though .
Does not matter as long as you love it.

squifflybobs · 25/02/2012 21:13

I have a Finlay, aged 1 and love the name. I think in 2010 the "Finley" spelling was in the mid 30's in the top 100 whilst Finlay was in the 60's- so popular but not ridiculously so. I think it is moving up the list though- a bit annoying as I have a name which was popular during the 1970's and had 3 classmates with the same name and hated it!

anyway, we've only met 1 other Finlay since he was born, although we live in NZ where names don't follow same trends as UK so much. I agree about Fin being pretty popular though, I was planning on shortening it but he seems to suit the long version more...

anatomyissues · 25/02/2012 21:16

I think Finlay is lovely - good luck!

tralalala · 25/02/2012 21:21

finlay/ley I know 9 under the age of 5!

But still like it. Prefer James though. Classic.

justhayley · 26/02/2012 08:05

What spelling works best do you think Finley or Finlay?

OP posts:
sparkle12mar08 · 26/02/2012 10:00

Prefer Finlay as a spelling, but whilst it's a pleasant enough name it doesn't make me go 'wow', it's just a bit meh, really. But it's not me that matters - do you love it. If so, bugger the rest of us and go with what your heart wants Smile
