as in "riders of Rohan"? If you're going Tolkein I'd opt for Aragorn.

Ecgwynn · 22/02/2012 18:17

Yes, pronounced Row-han rather than Roan.

GhastlyBespoke · 22/02/2012 18:25

No. It's pronounced Ro-an (silent H).

The H is pronounced in its Sanskrit form or bloody Tolkien.

oikopolis · 22/02/2012 18:25

the Rohan i know pronounces it just like Rowan. Row-inn really. no "a" sound in the last syllable.

Oikopolis- really? Rowinn? Sweet Lord that's dreadful.

Methe · 22/02/2012 18:32

I think Rohan is lovely :)

oikopolis · 22/02/2012 18:34

yeah it's a bit odd? I mean "row" like "row your boat" btw, not like the synonym for argument. (English is an awk language to be sure.)

but his parents prn it like that too, and no-one else seems to bat an eye. personally I want to say Row- han. I was a little surprised when i saw the spelling too tbh.

curlycreations · 22/02/2012 18:45

rowan keating mmmm

MaMattoo · 22/02/2012 18:54

I have a rohan with the Sanskrit H sound in between. People do call him rowan and roan at times. I was a bit of a lotr fan, but also like the way this name translates into various languages and cultures.

curlycreations · 22/02/2012 19:00

oh no he is ronan isnt he

PavlovtheCat · 22/02/2012 19:04

Ro-an. And it is lovely. Rowan is a different name.

GhastlyBespoke · 22/02/2012 19:29

Grin Curly. Yep.

MaMattoo - I have a Rohan (Ro-an) pronounced the Gaelic way. Smile. I read the entire LOTR trilogy on bed rest when I was expecting DS. In my head I always said it without the H.

changer22 · 22/02/2012 19:32

The Rohan I know is a Ro-an. He hates it when people say Ro-han.

33goingon64 · 22/02/2012 19:55

Rohan was the name of a very powerful family in medieval times in Brittany. The name to me speaks of power and strength, like Rex. I love it.

Psammead · 22/02/2012 20:04

I would pronounce it Row-han. But I wouldn't be surprised to hear it pronounced Ro-an. I can see how that works.

seeker · 22/02/2012 20:12

It's the name of my new great nephew. He's half Punjabi, half English. I've only seen the name in a text so far. I know they were looking for a name that works in both cultures.

usingapseudonym · 22/02/2012 20:22

My nephew is Rohan - definitely Ro- han with emphasis on han. Dad has indian/fijian relatives I think if that makes any difference.

drcrab · 22/02/2012 20:32

I know a little boy who's name is pronounced row-han. Dad is English mum is Indian.

GhastlyBespoke · 22/02/2012 20:33

I have met two Hindu families with little boys called Rohan emphasis on the -han.

Hulababy · 22/02/2012 21:48

Little boy I know called Rohan has it pronounced Row-han, emphasis on han.
Parents are Indian.

messymammy · 22/02/2012 21:52

I have 2 cousins called Rohan, both pronounce it row-an.

BuntyPenfold · 22/02/2012 22:17

I know one, called Row-han; a free spirit indigo child Wink

GhastlyBespoke · 22/02/2012 22:46

Probably just me being picky but I don't understand it being pronounced ROW han. It doesn't have a W in it.
Just me. Picky. Grin

GhastlyBespoke · 22/02/2012 22:47

Bunty - He's blue? Like a smurf?
