Claire and Clara

Love the name Clara for DC2 if they are a girl. Problem is my name is Claire and I'm worried it'll look like I'm trying to name DD after me. What do you think?

Over to you, MN jury...

Depends how you are pronouncing Clara - if it is going to be the continental style 'Klaah -ra' which everyone seems to be going for these days, then it's probably sufficiently different from Claire.

BTW, I knew a woman named Alicia who called her DD Alice, and nobody ever said anything. And it used to be the norm for boys to be named after their father, the exact same name. So you are not doing anything wrong!

Beamur · 21/02/2012 17:44

I think Clara is lovely. It is sufficiently different from Claire if that worries you.

PopcornBiscuit · 21/02/2012 17:49

They're effectively the same name, so TBH yes it would look like she was named after you.

diddl · 21/02/2012 17:58

They are the same name, but I think sound different enough tbh.

The other thing to watch (which might not worry you) is that post might be confusing if handwritten, or just Initial surname.

AThingInYourLife · 21/02/2012 18:05

Don't see a problem, even if you were naming her after yourself.

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 21/02/2012 19:43

I think it's fine, they sound different enough

nooka · 22/02/2012 02:42

I wouldn't personally as they are variations of the same name. But then I'd also avoid sharing an initial.

tammytoby · 22/02/2012 07:21

Too similar imo.

ripsishere · 22/02/2012 09:42

Lovely name and much nicer than Claire. DDs friend is Clara.
I'm not deliberately missing the point about your name BTW.
To me, they are two seperate names, particularly if you pronounce it Kla-ra.

Hope88 · 22/02/2012 10:15

Clara is lovely. Different to Claire. Don't worry. Go for it!

sparkle12mar08 · 22/02/2012 10:33

What about Claudia? The extra syllable gives a better note of difference I think, in both overall sound and pronunciation.

undecided101 · 25/02/2012 07:00

Thanks folks, general consensus is that Clara (pron. Klaah-ra) sounds different enough. Not bothered about initials as I have double-barrelled surname (maiden name - married name) whereas DD won't so any post will be addressed differently enough not to be opened accidentally.

Just need to wait it out to find out if DC2 is indeed a DD or a DS. God help us if it is a DS as DH and I can't find any names we like that haven't already been used by close friends / family!
