Our ds is due to be born on Saturday and we thought that we have finally agreed a name that we both like. Jude Theodore. Just wondered what the mn opinion is of this name? Do you think Jude is a bit feminine? Do the names go well together. Thanks for your opinions.

It has been a long road to get any name we both like

Looooove it. Vetoed by DH for current bump. Go for it. Envy

MerryMarigold · 20/02/2012 11:47

I have one. I nearly had a Theo first time round too! Quite religious together though.

I don't think it's too feminine at all. It is getting more popular too, so in a few years it will be very recognised as a boy's name.

PopcornBiscuit · 20/02/2012 12:09

Great choice :)

LaFilleSurLePont · 20/02/2012 13:19

I love Theodore, but hate Jude. It's extremely popular on MN,and I really can't understand why.

CharlieBoo · 20/02/2012 15:13

I know a couple of little Jude's (boys) and also dont get the attraction. Theodore is lovely though

noddyholder · 20/02/2012 15:15

I really like it.

GooseyLoosey · 20/02/2012 15:18

Is Jude not the patron saint of lost causes?

Also the other immediate associate for me is Jude the Obscure which is not exactly a laugh a minute.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 20/02/2012 15:19

Hey Jude - don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better....

Sorry - it's a girl & ^ that song.

HowCanADoorBeAJar · 20/02/2012 15:46

I'm going to go against the grain here because I love it. It's on my list for any future sons I may have. Only thing is, will you get annoyed with people singing Hey Jude at him? People are like that!

deardear · 20/02/2012 15:56

i actually like Jude as well and did consider it but it didnt go with the middle name we have or our surname.

notso · 20/02/2012 16:19

I really like it, but DH thinks it's not good with our surname.

I like it because it can't easily be shortened or nicknamed.

SLVC · 20/02/2012 16:20

I love it. Great name. And much more likely to be reminiscent of Hey Jude or Jude Law than Jude The Osbcure to the majority of people nowadays. And even though I have read the book, it never put me off the name anyway!

FoofFighter · 20/02/2012 16:21

I really like that, but I only ever known girl Judes.

I like the patron saint of lost causes! Defending the underdog. As a name it means 'Praise' (apparently). What I found out after I'd named ds2 was that in some other European languages, 'Jude' is just 'Judas' - they don't have a differentiation, which IS slightly off putting.

mamasmissionimpossible · 20/02/2012 17:58

themildmanneredjanitor - I wanted the name to be Theodore Jude, but DH prefers it the other way around, with Theodore as a middle name.

Thanks for your opinions.

I have a feeling that dh will change his mind and veto these names anyway. I don't want dc3 to end up as 'baby' for ever :(

OP posts:
MerryMarigold · 20/02/2012 19:16

I'm surprised dh is bothered with dc3. I found that my dh's 'vetoing' was restricted to ds1 and he pretty much gave me free rein with the other 2 Grin. Good Luck anyway.

PercyFilth · 20/02/2012 19:47

St Jude was often confused with Judas Iscariot, so he didn't get many customers :o That's how he became the patron saint of lost causes, because the punters would only pray to him after they'd tried all the other saints. The last resort.

I have never encountered a female Jude, only as a casual shortening of Judith.

freyamalaya · 20/02/2012 21:47

We have a one year old Jude and obviously think Jude is the best name in the world, easy to spell, pronounce, not too popular, classic, definitely a (cool) boy's name too... and sounds great with Theodore Grin

heartmoonshadow · 20/02/2012 21:55

I love Jude as a name not sure about Theodore but this is your baby. If DD was going to be a DS this time I would have gone into bat for Jude Isaac. Good luck with the birth.

Happyasapiginshite · 20/02/2012 23:17

It's a gorgeous name. We call him the patron saint of hopeless cases. When all else fails, he's the man to turn to.

It's a lovely name. I know a man-Jude and a child-Jude and it suits both of them beautifully.

ChineapplePunk · 20/02/2012 23:27

I love it and so does DH. I'm due in April and we're having a little boy (if the sonographer was correct :) ), and it's our front runner. In fact, that's what we call him now. Like others have said, I've never encountered a female Jude and to me it's very much a boys name.

MamaBearCharlie · 21/02/2012 11:39

Love Jude!! DH loves it too but that's a very close female family member's name so just not possible for us Sad

lottiegb · 21/02/2012 12:02

Love it, always have. I was cross when Jude Law became well known as I'm not especially keen on him. Jude the Obscure may be very gloomy but it's a good book, 'Hey Jude' was really Julian (Lennon) but Jude was thought to sound better, I like the idea of the saint of lost causes but really just think it stands as a good name regardless of any of these associations.

Female Judes are always Judiths IME (like Jules for Julie) and abbreviations do sound different to my ears than real names.

othersideofchannel · 21/02/2012 13:16

The name Jude does not travel well into other languages.

In German for example it would be pronounced Yoo-deh and actually means Jew. I also don't think it sounds that nice in French.

Additionally, I have to agree that it sounds quite feminine (to my ears anyway) - perhaps because I know a (female) Judy.
