doblet · 17/02/2012 20:16

DD1 is Jessica, dd2 is due soon. I love the name Holly but am worried people will just think about a news story from several years ago.
What do you think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Voidka · 17/02/2012 20:31

Was the first thing I thought about

Molly might work?

Petrean · 17/02/2012 20:31

Although contempories of your DC won't have that association, they're parents probably will.

Raahh · 17/02/2012 20:33

I saw this in active convos, and thought Soham straight away. [sorry]

Was my first thought too.

oikopolis · 17/02/2012 20:34

I'm not even from the UK and those murders were the first thing I thought of, sorry.

marvinthemartian · 17/02/2012 20:36

seriously?

people would not use names they like, because what - 10 years ago? two girls who happened to have the same names were murdered?

If you were close to the family, or part of the family, of either girl I can see it would be an issue.

but otherwise? so what if people think of it?

do you all think "I hope she hasn't got a sister called Holly/Jessica" when you come across a child called Jessica or Holly?

bizarre.

LOLerskates · 17/02/2012 20:36

Yep my first thought too I'm afraid :-(

smitgla · 17/02/2012 20:36

Had to say I loved it in the title - didn't even make the connection. Go with what you want as people will know your kids names an associate the with the names instead.

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 17/02/2012 20:40

Yes. My first thought on seeing thread title.

I thought gosh is it their anniversary/birthday. How old would they be.

I wondered 18 ? Or 21 ?

A good thing we remember them. RIP Sad

So, a bad idea for a name for your DD2 - however much it's a lovely name in itself.

But congratulations. Two DDs, sisters, lucky you and lucky them !!

Would you like other suggestions for names ?

PopcornBiscuit · 17/02/2012 20:41

Would avoid, sorry.

How about Jessica and...

Olivia
Sophie
Charlotte
Ruby
Rebecca
Chloe
Violet
Amber
Clara
Laura
Grace
Rachel
Megan

AThingInYourLife · 17/02/2012 20:43

"people would not use names they like, because what - 10 years ago? two girls who happened to have the same names were murdered?"

Um, yeah.

I wouldn't want my children going around with the names of two murdered little girls.

Who would want that association for their children?

Sparklingbrook · 17/02/2012 20:44

I think they would have been 21 this year. Angry

manicinsomniac · 17/02/2012 20:45

It was the first thing I thought of but I wouldn't let that stop you, there must be hunderds of Jessica and Holly sibling pairs out there, they're both popular names. Same with Madeleine - I've seen people say don't use because of Maddie McCann - but all three of these poor girls are just one of so many of their names.

If you did want to avoid Holly how about:
Hazel, Heidi, Hope, Hayley or Molly

TheAvocado · 17/02/2012 20:46

It was the first thing I thought of OP, then I remembered all the news reports, and the photos of those two little girls in their red football shirts. It was such a high-profile case it'd be in the forefront of most people's minds when you said your children's names together. Those poor little girls :(

Newtothisstuff · 17/02/2012 20:48

Call her whatever you like.. It gets silly... They are both lovely names Smile

birdofthenorth · 17/02/2012 20:48

Immediate connection. I'd avoid it. Better for your baby announcement not to be dampened by sad thoughts.

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 17/02/2012 20:49

Call her whatever you like ... except Holly - is my opinion OP

marvinthemartian · 17/02/2012 20:49

but it's not a real association!

I honestly find this really odd.

yes, it might be a fleeting thought for some people - but what then? do you really think that every time someone mentioned your girls they would have a small private remembrance for two other girls they had never even met?

that's just ludicrous.

I have no idea if either of my daughters share a name with someone who met an unfortunate end. they are reasonably popular names, so it is likely, tbh.

would you not name a boy Peter because of the Yorkshire Ripper?

or not call a girl Mary because of Mary Black?

JasperJohns · 17/02/2012 20:49

Both OK names - but I made the connection too, so would avoid for that reason

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 17/02/2012 20:50

I wouldn't call a boy Peter if my surname was Sutcliffe, no.

marvinthemartian · 17/02/2012 20:53

but that isn't what the OP asked.

afaik (and surely she would have mentioned it!) she does not share a surname with either of the Soham girls.

so, is Peter generally out of bounds as a name due to grisly associations then?

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 17/02/2012 20:53

It's the combination though marvin - Different from say calling a child "Madeleine" or either "Jessica" or "Holly"

Plonker · 17/02/2012 20:54

It was my first thought too, sorry Sad

Floggingmolly · 17/02/2012 20:55

No. Just don't.
