Can I have just "Kit" on its own, or would you name him "Christian / Christopher"?

That's it really.

No idea if this is a boy or a girl, but we have the girl's name picked out, so now just debating boys names. DH is being non-commital saying "there's no point me engaging in this as you'll just end up changing your mind on the day anyway"; DC#3 due in 2 weeks.

Already have a Penelope (Penny / Pen) and a Constance (Connie) so we use the shortened names in the main rather than their long versions. But I like the long versions of our daughters' names, whereas I am not so keen on Christian / Christopher but LOVE LOVE Kit.

So would you just name him Kit? Or would you always put a long version down on the birth certificate? Our surname is Reed so would be a very short name! But kind of reminds of me of "Jack Black"... "Kit Reed", so kinda cool anyway?

Middle name probably Benjamin or Samuel.

What would you do?

Love Kit and I would use just that. But then all my ds have 3 letter cvc names, it does mean that they can spell/read it whilst still in nursery Grin

If you fall for the ridiculous 'What if he's a high court judge' routine then I prefer Christian. But, I think the Honourable Kit Read sounds just perfect to me!

Boobz · 17/02/2012 05:09

It really is 50:50 isn't it??

So now I am off to google Kester to see if I can really go with that...

I can't get past the associations; kit kat, kitty cat and a 'nice bit of kit.'.. guess it's just not my cup of tea.

Do girls get called Kit as well if their full name is Christine? Just wondering.

How about Christoph instead of Christopher?

Bue · 17/02/2012 11:14

I love Kit but it needs a formal name on the birth certificate - either of those works. I grew up with a Kit and I was so puzzled when I was about 10 and saw his name as Christopher on a school register - I couldn't compute how Kit was a NN for that! But it is so much better than Chris. I also went to uni with a Kip, which is fab too.

pressing, the female Kits I know have both been Kathleen.

tentative123 · 17/02/2012 16:07

Oh the debate rumbles on, its so hard! Some parental support here; my gf was Christopher so that's popular.

WorrisomeHeart · 17/02/2012 18:58

My brother is named Christian because my mum loved Kit but there were too many Christophers in her immediate friend group. He's NEVER been called Kit!!

PopcornBiscuit · 17/02/2012 19:01

I'd always use a longer version.

Badgerina · 09/03/2012 19:22

Kester. Kit for short. Really like.

abbypumpkin · 09/03/2012 20:49

If you love kit and don't like any long version then you've answered the question. People tend to stick with what they were called by parents any way as they get too used to it. I do understand your dilemma I want o call dd2 izzy (I like Isabel bu oh doesn't) but don't think we're brave enough. Think shortened versions of names for boy are much more acceptable such as Tom, Sam, etc

RetroMum1 · 09/03/2012 20:57

I know a Kit who is just Kit on his birth certificate, he really wouldn't suit Christopher.

I am having the same dilemma with Bert, I don't like any of the full names but we didn't like using abbreviations. I am coming round to the idea though as there are lots of children now who are named abbreviations. I also think if you use the full name but don't like it and always use the nickname they will still be called the full name at school with the register.

Marmite2012 · 10/03/2012 16:27

I think Kit Reed sounds fabulous!!

biyboo · 11/03/2012 15:00

KIT, do you mean Knightrider's car?

glammanana · 11/03/2012 15:14

I like the Kit spelt with the double tt it sort of finishes it off,I myself have a Benn and never had any problems throughout school with him being mistaken for Benjamin,if you like it go for it.

FilterCoffee · 11/03/2012 15:19

Any news OP? :)

yellowflowers · 11/03/2012 23:01

But the name Christian is just so, well, Christian. Are you religious?

LondonNadiy · 12/03/2012 15:13

Creepy - I was having this exact convo with myself this morning (not even pg - this is how I entertain myself!!Hmm) Kit is one of the few names I like nn on bc for.

If you did go full name I'd go for Christian over Christopher. Kit is so much nicer than Chris, but in school he might prefer Chris - Kitty, Kit-bag jibes etc. But if it is Christian etc, it would probably be shortened to Chris, not Kit, without his sayso.

I think Kit on BC for this one! It sits really nicely with your surname too.

Bonsoir · 12/03/2012 15:14

You do not want to call you son Kit. Kit-Kat? Kitty? Where he will be able to hide from these terrible nicknames.

shedgirl · 15/03/2012 19:09

x2boys · 17/03/2012 09:56

Yorkshirerain · 25/09/2016 00:07

Always so interesting to read why people like/dislike a name. You never hear such honesty face to face (maybe for the best). I have a little Kit. I love the name - no issues with school, and never been confused with a kit bag yet! There are no others in his school and he doesn't have a longer name on his birth certificate. I wouldn't want too many people to like it - better to be a Kit than a John. As for new and hip - the name features in Enid Blyton's book The Boy Next Door. Grin
