Is Charlie really very popular in UK?

Hi! I am finding this forum so useful in getting opinions from UK without having to ask my friends (we want to keep name ideas secret). After loving the possible names of Toby Jacob or Stefan Jacob we now consider Charlie Jacob too. I have a feeling Charlie Jacob is a popular name in UK! Here in Holland there were only 20 Charlies in 2011. I love it as my grandad was Charlie and my husbands grandad was Jacob. Is every other baby boy named Charlie?

I don't think it's that popular in the UK.

It's a lovely name, go for it. Karel is the dutch version I think?

Um.... It's very popular! But it's a good name, so don't let that stop you if you like it.

The thing is our daughters name is really unusual in both countries, Pippi Marie (Pip). Charlie would also be different here but I am wondering if our English friends and family would think, why such a popular name with such an unusual one? I do think Charlie and Pip sounds a bit like a children's book! But in an odd way I kind of like that fact!

Pippi Longstocking and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Yep, see what you mean!

Charlie Brown? All great characters though (I think)

Go for it> Love the name Pippi, and it goes very well with Charlie.

Montsti · 15/02/2012 08:32

It is popular but not an "in" name as such. I know various Charlies of differing ages...

I would go for it - think it's a lovely name and goes well with Pippi!

Bellaholland · 15/02/2012 10:13

Thanks! It's deffinetly a winner I think!

I have a 7 year old Charlie and although I know no others in his age group, there are a few baby charlies I know been born in the last few years. I obviously love it though, is great for a baby, a child, teenager and grown man. Good luck

usualsuspect · 15/02/2012 10:24

Every other baby I know is called Charlie or Alfie , so it is very popular but if you like it , use it

Bellaholland · 15/02/2012 10:39

I guess it's kind of nice he will have something commonly English about him? He will grow up in holland and be Dutch really! I like the idea of people thinking its a real English name (although originally German!). Also passes a little bit of my family on to holland!

Ooh love the name Charlie. I think Charlie and Pippi/Pip sound fab together! Sure, Charlie is popular but that's because it's a great name (and I'm not biased..don't have one!) and personally I don't know any babies/toddlers/primary age kids called Charlie despite having a toddler and a baby and knowing lots of kids...so it's all relative. Bonus that it's unusual in Holland and a family name - do it! IMO much nicer than Toby or Stefan

According to the office for national statistics, Charlie was the 5th most popular boys name in England and Wales in 2010.

www.babynames.co.uk/popular-baby-names# has interactive charts where you can see a name's popularity in the UK over the last hundred years.

At our school, if you don't know a child's name you should just shout Charlie/Ben/Jash/Sam because it's probably one of those.

I know about twelve Charlies that I can think of.

It's a lovely name though.

freerangeeggs · 15/02/2012 18:47

*Josh not Jash. Though Jash is kinda cool.

scoobychocolate · 15/02/2012 19:04

What about Casey Jacob. I only say it cause its my sons name lol

survivingwinter · 16/02/2012 19:52

Very popular around here too but a nice, classic name - you can't go wrong with it really which I guess it what makes it popular!
