B name when surname is J??

curiousgeorgie · 14/02/2012 15:03

My surname starts with a J...

I don't like any boy names, literally, I can't think of any that I like and trawl through this forum constantly!

I already have a DD Matilda.

The only name that I somewhat like is Bailey.

DH says no, absolutely not. He'll get teased and bullied at school.

Advice?? Does it really matter??

(Also, suggestions welcome)

The 'name' Bailey is hideous anyway, but if you're asking about the 'BJ' thing, someone will probably notice at some point and he will be teased.

FaithHopeAndKevin · 14/02/2012 15:06

Don't.

diddl · 14/02/2012 15:26

Not worth it for Bailey imo.

shesparkles · 14/02/2012 15:27

Wrong. Just wrong.

curiousgeorgie · 14/02/2012 15:30

Hmmm... I suspected as much :)

Please give me some suggestions! We seriously haven't shortlisted any from 2 books.

Its making me stress!

The only hope you've got of using Bailey is if you give him a middle name starting with A - then he has to be very careful to sign off as BAJ for the rest of his life. And you could nickname him Badger...

That was a long shot - sorry, it's really not going to work!!

How about Dylan - then he'll be DJ (much cooler) :)

belgo · 14/02/2012 15:40

BJ -no way. Bailey doesn't go with Matilda either.

Positiveplus · 14/02/2012 16:08

Bailey is not the best name IMO and I would definitely avoid the whole BJ thing!!

Current boys names I like are:
Nathan
Joel
Leon
Joseph
Caleb
Jackson
Silas
Dominic
Alex
Daniel
Linus
Jacob

JustHecate · 14/02/2012 16:09

I think Arthur would go nicely with Matilda

MrsDeeBee · 14/02/2012 16:11

Don't use a name with a 'D' either. Smile

Tillyscoutsmum · 14/02/2012 16:12

I'd avoid the BJ thing if possible (and do Grin)

We have a Matilda and Fergus. Others on the list were Laurence, Dominic, Fraser. How about Riley ? Similarish sort of name to Bailey imo

Chateauneuf · 14/02/2012 16:13

How about Amarula instead? Wink

Chateauneuf · 14/02/2012 16:15

Or more seriously, Finlay?

caz05 · 15/02/2012 07:33

I love the name beau but our surname begins with a J so we decided against it because of the initials being BJ. At some point in his life I am sure he would have been teased about it and although kids will find all sorts to tease about didnt want to fuel the fire.

I think as well as finding a good name you also need to check out what the initials will spell out and I did this with all our name choices just to make sure.

piellabakewell · 15/02/2012 07:45

DD has a female friend called Bailey, she's 15.

Last year a new girl started at DD's school. She was telling me about her and how she had just arrived in the UK. DD said she had a long complicated African name so her nickname was BJ. I snorted and explained politely to DD what BJ stands for and suggested that if she did start using that nickname at school, she was unlikely to use it for long.

My grandma was Matilda and she was married to a Horace, so how about that? :)

Petrean · 15/02/2012 07:51

With a middle initial as well I really don't see the problem... Smile
I have to say though, I really don't like the name Bailey.

bradbourne · 15/02/2012 07:59

BJ is not a good set of initials to have.

Harvey? Caleb? Cameron? Riley?

Montsti · 15/02/2012 10:11

It's not great, but if it means not naming your child your absolute favourite name I would ignore the BJ association initials and go for it. However, if you are down to 2 names go with the non-B one!

Thumbwitch · 15/02/2012 10:15

Definitely don't saddle the poor boy with the initials BJ.
Don't like Bailey either.

Bradbourne has suggested the names I was going to.

usualsuspect · 15/02/2012 10:17

I know a couple of boys with BJ as their initials , they have never had a problem

oh and I like Bailey a lot

bradbourne · 15/02/2012 10:25

Rory?

Twinklebum · 15/02/2012 10:32

I love the name bailey and I don't think it would be a problem re the initials I know a girl called billie-joe nn bj she never got teased

I also quite like bailey-ray

namingblunder · 02/03/2012 10:00

Don't do it.
BJ are not good initials whatever middle names you go for. It makes no difference. Kids are cruel.
I made a similar mistake naming one of my DCs and am now having to change family surname through deed with solicitor.... I wish I'd listened to friends and family who advised me not to do it...but I thought it would be ok... but 3 years later I realise I've saddled my kid with a disastrous name and we have to change it before school. HTH.
Sorry, cos Bailey's a lovely name.

Some friends of ours innocently gave their baby boy the initials 'BJ' without knowing the connotations it has for a certain generation of Brits (they're from Europe). They use the initials liberally as a nickname and friends (I have to admit including us) peed ourselves the first time we heard it, but now just feel a bit sad for them as it raises so many comments from other parents.

We've noticed it's only really those who are now 30 something that find it funny - younger and older generations don't seem to have the same association (we had to explain to our parents why we spluttered when an email heralding the birth of BJ came through), so your LO might not have any issues at school . Probably not worth it though...
