Queenie

Thoughts on Queenie?

I love Queenie, we are in south east London and I love that she would have a sense of relevant local history to her name.

There are a lot of the old fashioned names coming back around here like Dolly, Mabel, Ethel and Maud so I don't think it would be that out there and I really do like the idea of her beng able to tell people about the history of her name.

Regina is a fab name, but only when pronounced in the proper old-fashioned way (to rhyme with vagina; the US version "regeena" grates on me big time).

ThatVikRinA22 · 10/02/2012 19:48

i like Queenie - its meant to be a pet name for my name which is Victoria.

Denj33 · 10/02/2012 19:50

Yes, French dumpling. Also a shape!!
Think it's v pretty

MyLifeIsStillChaotic · 10/02/2012 19:55

No, no, no. Just no.

shelley72 · 10/02/2012 19:56

it was my late grandma's name, and my god did she live up to it Smile. so i do have a soft spot for it, but its not a name that i considered for our DD. Lily also has royal connections (Lilibet was queens nickname) although its quite cutesy and popular around here

seeker · 10/02/2012 19:56

Quenelle? Really? Like the shape you carve carrots into?

Denj33 · 10/02/2012 19:58

That a julienne, quenelle is an oval shape, as in quenelle of ice cream :)

Queenie was surely only ever a nickname, for Victoria, could be used for Elizabeth. You wouldn't use 'Kingy' would you.

Makes me think of Queenie in Blackadder (cute, if ruthless), or as an adjective pertaining to the band, or to theatrically gay behaviour 'that's a bit queenie'.

Denj33 · 10/02/2012 20:31

Why is it cruel??
It's also the name of a shape, people call their DDs ivy and violet, does that mean they think they are plants??

Chubfuddler · 10/02/2012 20:32

Ivy and violet are also awful.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 10/02/2012 20:33

It reminds me of Adrian Mole

yellowflowers · 10/02/2012 20:34

I love it though only as a nickname for Elizabeth or Victoria

yellowflowers · 10/02/2012 20:35

That's really rude Vitamin C

vitaminC · 10/02/2012 20:54

Rude? I'm honestly not convinced she wasn't joking, TBH.

And there's a big difference between naming a child after a flower and naming a child "dumpling"!

Queeenie's not a name I would go for, but it's not horrible. Same with Ethel, Mabel etc. And I actually have a dd called Maud... But with all the pressure young girls face regarding appearance and body image, calling a child "dumpling" is just setting them up for ridicule and is downright cruel and abusive :(

Shoutymomma · 10/02/2012 22:38

Regina is a great name.... if you want your teenaged daughter to start refusing to eat because she is being called Vagina at school. Forward thinking, people!!

RetroMum1 · 10/02/2012 22:57

Thanks for all the comments and opinions.

Queenie was originally a nickname for victoria and later Elizabeth, we don't like the name Elizabeth so wouldn't use that.

Queenie was also commenly given in the east end to the first born daughter which I think is really lovely. i also like Elsie but is already very popular around here.

Vitaminc Maud is a fab name but my friend already has one.

Not at all keen on Regina or Virginia! It wasn't really to do with the golden jubilee but more to do with the east end connection.

Then go for Pearl!

FrankiDon182 · 10/02/2012 23:11

I am from the eastend and know a few 'queenies' iam pretty sure none of them are actually there given name but, it is certainely connected with someone of great pride, well respected and loved!

How about Eliza? Iam liking Lillabet as well - never heard of that before, very unusual! I long for a daughter whom will be called Genty or Violet :) DH hates my other favourite (Florence!) what does your DH/Family think of Queenie?

PopcornBiscuit · 10/02/2012 23:14

I am not familiar with the East End or why Queenie is a name associated with it. What's the story?

Wizbangwallop · 11/02/2012 00:31

Personally think Queenie is lovely, and Pearl too. Rather depends on how it works with your last name tho. A workmate wanted to use Queenie for a future DC but ended up using the name for the dog instead after the old snipsnip...

Alligatorpie · 11/02/2012 05:43

I used to teach ESL in Taiwan, and had a student with an 'English' name who was called Queenie. I thought it was a bit strange TBH. Not sure I would use it for a proper name. Sorry.
