arguments FOR calling child a ''ridiculous name" (direct quote from dear mum)

Polkadotfanatic · 10/02/2012 16:26

Yes, it is true, I like a name which fills everybody most with horror. ''You cant possibly do that to a child''. ''How will the child ever have a normal job/become a lawyer or advocate?" ''You aren't thinking of child's self esteem'' are some of the things I have heard ... etc etc...

I know it's ridiculous to have to argue a child's name, but the response from people is that the name is nothing short of child abuse...

So far my ridiculously weak argument is this:

Beyoncé - "different" name, but the girl has gone far in life, despite this name

I cannot think of anymore people with ''not quite normal'' names who are great politicians /famous/ have cured diseases/ nobel peace prize/ etc and wondered if you knew any. I am talking about people who weren't born into grandeur (as we all know, slebs name their kids a delightful array of unusual names)....

Help me please?!?!?

NB - This is meant to be a fun/tongue in cheek thread, I genuinely wont let anyone marr my decision once it's made, but it would be fun to be able to say - ''well what about Tsellaphunaria Golumptuous - she is a World class concert pianist...''

Thanks guys x

Perhaps he can have a twin sister and I will call her Scarlett? Glaikit wants me to have a child named Shittah. :o

randommoment · 10/02/2012 17:37

Poesie is gorgeous! Enough to make me want another dd.

BelleEnd · 10/02/2012 17:39

ROFL @ Shittah Brick :o
I am a Ross, and we did consider Albert :o My sister swears she knows a Courtenay Fish Shock :o

Ignore all the negatives it's a lovely name.I've come to the conclusion you either love or loathe unusual names, I'm from the love category it's the run of the mill names I struggle to show any enthusiasm for and I'm sure my face gives the game away when I'm told what a baby is called.

When I had my son FIL got quite angry about the fact we named him Tate but he is aged 75 and from a generation of traditional names. He said he was embarassed telling his friends and relations what we had called his Grandson but you know what I did not give a damn because the choice was not for him to make, he'd had his opportunity. My Mum and Auntie also hated his name but were more discreet in voicing their objections.

Jux · 10/02/2012 17:41

I think it's a nice name and I love it's meaning.

Pixie Lott
Um, I'll probably think of a few more, but right now all I can think of are the names of 60s 70s pop stars like MoonUnit Zappa or Satchel Allen (OK he wasn't a pop star), Zowie Bowie etc.

airborne · 10/02/2012 17:42

Fenella Fudge (BBC 2 radio news reader)
Riz Lateef (another BBC newsreader)

Now with names like that I would've thought they wouldn't have been taken seriously but they read the neeeeews!

...must be something about newsreaders.....

BelleEnd · 10/02/2012 17:43

mumofthemonsters Tate is a lovely name! Cute but also manly. Please call any more children you may have Lyle, it would be so sweet! :o

Polkadotfanatic · 10/02/2012 18:06

awwww...you guys.... smiles and feels love
thanks - perhaps I should just print this thread out and show people lol

I would say that the only thing with people like Pixie Lott (Victoria Louise) and Birdy (Jasmine) are that they actually have real names to fall back on and their stage names are just that.

Posy Simmonds real name is Rosemary, but she is known as Posy and that is that. clunks gavel

I love love Poesie and you are right, she might have a few problems with the spelling, but mostly (hopefully) people will soon catch on.

I was expecting a slaying for this..... you guys are great :)

Bellend - Colin Powel pronounces Colin Coe-lin.

JekyllandHydeMum · 10/02/2012 19:10

Florence was regarded as a weird name when Mr and Mrs Nightingale gave it to their daughter.

MooncupandPizza · 10/02/2012 19:13

I don't even think that is a ridiculous name, I think it's rather pretty.

I suppose it might be a bit cute/sweet but I think manageable as an adult too.

chickensaregreen · 10/02/2012 19:15

The Nightingales also had a daughter called Parthenope which didn't quite catch on as much!

I like the name Poesie.

EdlessAllenPoe · 10/02/2012 19:18

both my daughters names were mentioned on a recent 'weird name' thread in some form..so i am quite biased on this. My brothers both have weird names.

a weird name is...

  1. unique - they'll never have to be 'Edgar 1 or Edgar2'
  2. character forming. My daughter is very proud of her name and everyone remembers it, and her..my brothers are very happy to have odd names (defining part of self) as adults
  3. these days people are less silly about 'odd' names. i know many business people with names that might be considered strange...
jaffacakehips · 10/02/2012 19:29

Really like this name, I would spell it Posie or Posy but that's just me.

Tell your Mum...politely to get stuffed. My Dad was the same. Smile

I know people called Merlin, Hunter, Cosmo, Lulu and Nigel!

crustyonion · 10/02/2012 19:56

I have an unusual name. I didn't realise this as a child and spent years hoping that maybe this shop would be the one with a mug saying [crustyonion's real name]'s mug, but alas...

I fucking love it now. I know it's not totally unique world-wide, but I've never met anyone else who has ever met anyone else with my name IYSWIM.

I really like Poesie by the way. wasn't she in The Flumps?

JekyllandHydeMum · 10/02/2012 20:14

If Parthenope had revolutionised nursing, then Parthenope would have caught on.

Rudyard Kipling; Rudyard was a weird name, though IIRC Rudyard was his middle name.

chipmonkey · 10/02/2012 20:18

I think Poesie is really pretty. People will spell it Posie but that's not really anything to get worked up about.
I think the best think to do with a name is to present it as a fait-accompli and not to discuss it with anyone beforehand. It is nice to think that your parents thought your name was beautiful. My name means Golden Princess in Irish and while I sadly don't live up to that ideal at all, it is nice to think that I was that to my parents when I was born.

Polkadotfanatic · 10/02/2012 20:28

:) Thanks so far guys. Yes you are right, names shouldnt probably be discussed before the event, but the only ones I told were mum, SIL and our close friends. SIL's point was that her sister's daughter is called Rose nn Rosie. Rosie and Poesie.

Middle names, if anyone is still around?

I love Alice and I love Adele.... surname begins with G

Purplelooby · 10/02/2012 20:31

Despite the fact that my mother gave me an unusual name (she was 21 and it was the 70s - and I've never met anyone else with my name), she criticises all of the unusual names that I mention! The truth is, I love having a name that nobody else has; at school nobody really realised that it was unusual... no one can spell it or even pronounce it until they've known me for at least a year, but I honestly feel that it's worth it to be unique.

Career-wise, I've done pretty well for myself but no more details that that :)

Poesie is gorgeous by the way - I was expecting faaaaaaaaaaaar worse!

chipmonkey · 10/02/2012 21:30

Poesie Alice has a better ring than Poesie Adele.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 10/02/2012 21:36

I love Poesie, it is very pretty!
My middle name is Adele, so obviously I opt for that one :)

onetwoflea · 10/02/2012 21:55

Poesie is great - it's not ridiculous, you have clearly stated its meaning and origin which she'll love in the future and it roots her to her unique home.

FWIW I have a very common english name, and people still spell it in different ways. I have an easy to spell but (it spells as it sounds) foreign origin surname - people always make up complicated contrivances which makes it much more complicated!!! Therefore I named my children whatever I wanted to, on the grounds that whether you have a simple or complicated name, some idiot will always spell it incorrectly.

TheWicketKeeperIsDown · 10/02/2012 23:12

It's the surname of Clemence Poesy, who was in Birdsong recently. I think it's really pretty, and agree that Alice sounds better as a middle name.

TrottersIndependantTrading · 11/02/2012 00:03

i think Poesie is a beautiful name. I have an unusual name and always get one liners and silly remarks and variations, but it doesn't bother me and never has and people definitely remember me.
