Is Lucy too popular?

Have been ages trying to decide between Lucy and Louisa. Now DD1 has started preschool and two children are called Lucy, plus two boys called Lucas and one called Luke. Is this just an unfortunate coincidence or is the name overused?
Baby has been around for weeks with only a nickname - I feel like I am failing her with my indecision. Nickname is Lulu. It has been suggested that I just go with that name, but it just does not seem right to let her grow up without a grown up name.

Both very nice names.

Petrean · 10/02/2012 18:54

I know 3... All born in the last 5 months. I think it's definitely back on the up.

EttiKetti · 10/02/2012 18:55

I have a Lucy and know only two more, both in their 20s. Mine is 9 and I still love it, although she's mostly a lulu!!

EllenParsons · 11/02/2012 04:19

Lucy does always seem quite popular but with good reason - it is a lovely name! It was my childhood favourite name that I had always planned to call my future DD (but my cousin got there and used the name before me!) I don't think it is TOO over done though. There is always a risk of multiple DC with the same name at school but I don't think being a Lucy definitely resigns you to being Lucy A, B or C.

Louisa is also very pretty. Nice name either way :)

I like it but it is very popular where i live with several toddlers and babies given the name in the last couple of years in a small town.

JekyllandHydeMum · 11/02/2012 16:39

I have a teenage Lucy; she has always been the only one in her class, though there's always been others in the school. There was one two years older, and one three years younger. She was the only Lucy in her Brownies and the only one in her Guides. I think it's getting more popular, though, as I know a couple of under fives.

I don't know any Louisas, only one Louise and two Lucias (one aged 19, the other aged 9).

My Lucy likes her name.

morethemerrier · 11/02/2012 21:05

Lucy is top of my list, with Lulu as a nn! Grin

I agree that it is nice to have a 'sunday' name, due in 8 weeks with DC4 and haven't got a single boys name!

shemademedoit · 11/02/2012 21:34

What about Lucie?

SharkBite · 11/02/2012 21:36

I have a Lucie, and there is only one other Lucy in her primary school.

MsWeatherwax · 11/02/2012 22:01

What about Laura, with Lulu as a nn?

Selks · 11/02/2012 22:07

Just realised what a great name Lucy is. Use it if you can, it's fab.

YodasMummy · 11/02/2012 23:58

A name like Lucy, which is lovely and not faddy will always be popular - why? Because its such a beautiful, timeless name and that's a great thing.
I'm really pleased I called my DD Lucy rather than a faddy name, a top 10 name or a yoo-neek spelling thereof.

Go with the name you love the most because in 10 days / weeks / months / years, the last thing you'll want to be doing is thinking "i wish I'd called her X but I didn't because mumsnet ppl said xyz about it."

Go with your heart.

FourThousandHoles · 12/02/2012 00:02

I have a 7yo Lucy

She is one of three in her school year of 90

I know of a couple of others too, of varying ages from adult down to about 6

No baby Lucys though

It's a classic, timeless name which is popular because it's lovely (imo)

When we named dd1 Lucy we didn't realise how popular it was but even if we had, it wouldn't have made a difference

FourThousandHoles · 12/02/2012 00:03

Having said all the above, I also think that Louisa is a lovely name

ShineYourButtonsWithBrasso · 12/02/2012 00:06

I have a Lucy (y3)

I don't know of any other Lucys in our area.

At home we may call her loopie lou becuase she is!

FourThousandHoles · 12/02/2012 00:28

haha Shine

my y3 Lucy is Loopy Lou too Grin

Psammead · 12/02/2012 10:45

I have a Lucia. We call her Lucy. I know several other Lucys.

SLVC · 12/02/2012 12:18

I know four little Lucy's under 6, a Lucille and a LuLu; don't know any Louisas.. I've always thought Eloise was very pretty as another suggestion?

SLVC · 12/02/2012 12:19

(apologies for the stray apostrophe my spell check helpfully added to Lucys. Or should that be Lucies. I digress)

BatCave · 12/02/2012 14:40

I have a Lucy! Love the name it suits her to a tee. Apparently its something like 13th most popular for her age (20 months now) but we've not met any others. We know a Lucia (pronounced Lu chee ah) but its different enough.

Go with your gut and try not to worry :) Maybe an unusual middle name would help? (Ours is Lucy June after her grandmother) x

SLVC · 12/02/2012 14:46

I agree that if you love it, don't get distracted by possible multiples in a class. Of all the names you'd pressume would be doubled up, in my DDs class there are two Phoebes and two Roberts. And just the one Lucy! You simply never know..

shemademedoit · 12/02/2012 16:10

I have a Lucy. We've moved to France and she loves being the only one with a 'y' because over here its Lucie. We call her Cece sometimes because that's all her older brother managed when she came along.

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 12/02/2012 16:20

I love Lucy as a name but think Louisa is a better name if you want the nn Lulu, does that make sense?

Ecgwynn · 12/02/2012 18:46

Lucy is a great name for a baby, perhaps too cutesy when older though.

Louisa would suit an adult better and, as people have said, you can call her Lou or whatever when she's little.

What's wrong with Louise? I find Louisa on the frilly side tbh.

Lily? Or is this really commonplace these days?

zumm · 12/02/2012 19:15

I also v like the name Lucy, and am considering using it, but like ecg, I wonder how it will carry when older.
Anyone know any adult Lucys that aren't cutsie? - wonder whether the sweetness of the name impacts how girls with this name are treated and thus what they go on to do in adulthood?
