Keir or Cameron?

Hello, would you mind giving me your opinions on the names Keir and Cameron? We are having a baby boy and are struggling to decide! Already have a DD called Orla.

My one reservation about Keir is that although I am Scottish, we live in England and I wonder if Keir might sound like Kia and people might misunderstand his name? Or am I just being stupid?! Thanks for your help :)

I like Keir, I would pronounce it Key-er but a bit softer. I don't like Cameron for some reason!

Littlecherublegs · 09/02/2012 22:13

I dont mind either! Think Keir would be ok in England.
Only reservation with Cameron is the link to a certain David... Wink

tara0202 · 09/02/2012 22:15

Thanks for the replies! Little - that is my reservation about Cameron too! Being Scottish, to me it is just a solid Scottish name but DC has hijacked it a bit for me!

I love both names. I know several Camerons, and only one Keir if you are bothered about popularity. Both sound good with Orla imo.

I'm Scottish too so could never hear Keir as Kia Wink.

MuffinTheMilf · 09/02/2012 22:20

Keir = Keir Hardie (early Labour politician) = I like
Cameron = David Cameon connection = dislike

Sorted. Politics aside I prefer Keir but iPad auto correct keeps wanting to change it to Keira Hmm

JollySergeantJackrum · 09/02/2012 22:22

Love Keir. Partly for the Keir Hardie reason, but I just like the name. DH doesn't, unfortunately.

I don't like Cameron because of the DC connotation. And I'm Scottish living in Scotland. I am into politics though and vetoed a LOT of names for DS because of political connections.

FayKnights · 09/02/2012 22:23

Love the name Keir, I have a Ciaran and shorten his name to sound like Keir.

SkivingAgain · 09/02/2012 22:23

Cameron

JollySergeantJackrum · 09/02/2012 22:24

In case you're intereseted, DS is Harris, my fave name currently is Ramsay.

My cousin has an Orla and her brother is Miller.

maybetoday · 09/02/2012 22:30

Keir is great, much nicer than Cameron IMO

tara0202 · 09/02/2012 22:31

Thanks for the replies! I know the two names are polar opposites in a political sense which makes it harder to decide - wouldn't want anyone to think we were Tories in naming him Cameron!

Jolly - do like Miller (and Harris and Ramsay), goes nice with Orla.

I know an 'English' Keir, most people pronounce it Key-ah. A drawback is that it tends to get spelt Kier.

PopcornBiscuit · 09/02/2012 23:22

I prefer Keir, due to David Cameron associations.

nooka · 10/02/2012 01:46

Keir is great. Cameron is not.

Rubyl1978 · 10/02/2012 02:40

Keir is lovely as is cameron but keir is my fave name ever

Montsti · 10/02/2012 06:32

I do know quite a few Camerons but much prefer it to Keir which I really don't like - it almost seems unfinished...The Keir Hardie thing would put me off too - ha ha!

jaffacakehips · 10/02/2012 09:09

I'm Scottish and I don't NOT think of David Cameron when i hear the name Cameron. That being said I've grown up with this as a first name so don't have the same connotations Smile My old flatmate was called Blair, and I lived with him during the Tony Blair era and he never had people make any sort of silly comments about his name.

I like both names, have you thought about Kerr instead of Keir?

Hamish, Lachlan, Ramsay and Fraser are also lovely imo.

tara0202 · 10/02/2012 10:20

I feel the same about Cameron. Being Scottish it doesn't at all make me think about David Cameron but to the loads of English friends I've mentioned it to, it seems to make them think about it and since this baby will be born and live in England it' s making me think twice!

Really love Fraser too but dh doesn't!

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it, definitely helps to have independent opinions!

I know 2 Camerons, but they are all over 35, and as such I would never connect their name with Call-Me-Dave. However, if I met a baby called Cameron, I would automatically make the assumption that his parents were paying homage to DC. It might not be true, and it wouldn't ever come up in conversation iyswim, but it's what I would think.

20 years from now, when DC will be a part of the best forgotten past, then the name Cameron might come into its own again.

I love the name Keir. Not just because the other choice is Cameron...I just love the sound of the name Smile

CumpyGrunt · 10/02/2012 10:40

I have a Cameron, known as Cammy. He'll be 12 this year though so had the name long before 'call me dave' was on the scene.

Saying that, Dave C doesn't make me think of Mr potato head anyway, but a lad I went to school with with special needs. I think he would probably be a better bet for PM Grin talked far more sense anyway.

I think Keir is lovely & would consider that though. Smile
