I absolutely love the name Woody, but worry that as DS (I'm 17 weeks pregnant) grows up, he may need something more 'serious' to fall back on - I'd like to name him Edward (Woody) Ernest Murphy. My DH points out that he might be called Eddie Murphy. I actually like Eddie, but worry that he might have the piss taken out of him a bit. I figure if I push for the nn Woody, we might get away with it? Any thoughts? Hormones may be getting in the way of a clear decision here :-)

Woodward? More of a surname, but surnames-as-firstnames are quite fashionable at the moment.

If it helps my DH is Edward. He never gets called Eddie, always Ed or Edward and I have been known to call him woody too in the past..
I think Edward is a gorgeous name and you can definatly get away with Woody as a nn imo. I personally wouldn't worry about the Eddie murphy thing, there are plenty of worse people to be associated with!

Elwood?

Surely woody is used as a nn for erection more so in America?

Hankins are you me????

I only ask as our chosen name for our DS was Wilfred which my DH's brother nicked (to be fair it was their grandfathers name)

I also had the shortlist names Ernest (Ernie) and Woodrow (Woody) - we went for Woodrow and if I am honest it took me a long time for it to settle with me, I somehow didn't feel cool enough (not being dj's or tv presenters) but now I LOVE it - he was nearly always know as Woody right up until he started school, but now he is mostly know as Woody with family and close friends but as Woodrow to alot of his friends at school.
He also occasionally gets called Ro which I never imagined as a nn.

Good luck - and go for it.
