I prefer Emilia it is on our shortlist of 3 - I think it is because when I was small I read books about 'Naughty Amelia-Jane' and this put me off Amelia.

cece · 04/02/2012 22:32

Both nice but prefer Emilia - just a bit more unusual. Plus I like Emilia Fox. Smile

I have an Amelia, we considered both but thought dd would spend her life saying "No E milia

And she is an Amelia Jane. And she is naughty Grin

PrisonerOfWaugh · 04/02/2012 22:36

I prefer Emilia. I know a small Amelia and her name always sounds a little 'forced' to my ears, not sure why, maybe it sounds a little like A-melia, like it is hyphenated.

Emilia flows better, but the line is fine. Both are pretty Smile

Fluffmacduff · 04/02/2012 22:36

I LOVE Emilia nn Emmy.

therewasalittlegirl · 04/02/2012 22:39

Hmm it's a tough one. Do you all pronounce them pretty much the same, with maybe just a hint of a difference at the beginning...? Thanks for the responses.

I love Emilia. Absolutely love it!!

Montsti · 05/02/2012 05:39

I love Emilia and, in fact DD would have been called this if SIL hadn't named her DD Amelia! I find Amelia a bit whiney and horsey - I know it doesn't make sense as so similar.

WinkyWinkola · 05/02/2012 05:45

Emilia definitely. Much more classy.

TinkerMaloo · 05/02/2012 10:03

Definitely Emilia!

Amelia is more common (and is also the name of a medical condition en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_%28birth_defect%29 )

(on a side note cant believe poeple call children Candida!)

therewasalittlegirl · 05/02/2012 10:12

Thank you all. Emilia it is. If it's a girl that is! :)

Ds1 was going to be Emilia. I like both but prefer Emilia because it is less popular and you can shorten it to Emmy.

seeker · 05/02/2012 10:48

Try it out on real life people and ask them to spell it.. Then choose the spelling that most people use. Honestly- it is a real pain having to correct people all the time.

I would go for Amelia anyway.

MrsPotter · 05/02/2012 10:51

Thanks a lot now i know i seem to have named my dd after a birth defect!! Why put something like that on here you cow!!!!!!!

susiedaisy · 05/02/2012 11:04

I have a friend who's sister is called Candida her parents still have no clue that it's the name of a fungal type infection Grin

seeker · 05/02/2012 11:04
Grin

Just adding the grin mrspotter appears to have forgotten.

susiedaisy · 05/02/2012 11:06

Meant to say op love both the names

susiedaisy · 05/02/2012 11:07

Well done seekerGrin

BillyBollyBandy · 05/02/2012 11:21

Well I have Amelia and Claudia so there is no hope for me, one birth defect and one lame Wink

Strangely, no one ever thinks of that when looking at my 2 beautiful girls.

Seriously though, as Amelia is the more common name you will spend forever saying "no not A-melia, E-milia, no with an E, no spelt mil not mel, no it's a different name" ad infinitum. Absolutely fine of course if that is the name you want, but bear it in mind. Seeker makes a good suggestion.

PercyFilth · 05/02/2012 14:09

Amalia is another option which has a more distinctive pronunciation.

Aribura · 06/02/2012 02:49

Depends whether you want her to be known as "Amelia S" or "Emelia with an e" for the rest of her school life. Beautiful name but if you're looking for unique then don't go there.

seeker · 06/02/2012 08:22

No Amelias or Emelia in either of my children's schools or in our circle of friends.

Unique is over rated.

Ineedadollar · 06/02/2012 08:25

I know more Emilias than Amelias. Here people say 'no, -A-melia' as we all assume it begins with an E Smile
