Name panic >> Susan + Suggestions....

I'm having enormous trouble with names with only a week 'til due date. We know we're having a little girl. OH has turned his nose up at most of the list and the only name we could even remotely agree on is Susan (Susie/Suzi) which wasn't my favourite but I could compromise. At which point, my mother who has been giving 'helpful suggestions' all along (most of which sound like boarding-school prefects or horsey-horsey-rah-rah names) said that Susan was boring, outdated, dull and WHATever that she would call her something else - quite out of character ConfusedSad !!! So, please please I'd like MNers's thoughts on Susan? And any more suggestions that aren't Top Ten but aren't strange or twee as my brain has stopped.....

Suzette. Cool name, know one little one. Also love Susannah. Very pretty.

Firawla · 03/02/2012 13:15

susan is quite nice, it does sound a bit 'middle aged' at first but if i saw it on a baby i would find it cute.

BlueChampagne · 03/02/2012 13:25

I think I'd go for Suzanne. Susan makes me think of Swallows and Amazons and Narnia books. Also like, for what it's worth:

Corinna
Meredith
Meryl

Hope they don't fall into the horsey/boarding school category!

pilates · 03/02/2012 13:42

Agree with your mum it's awful.

How about

Emmeline
Elizabeth
Catherine

AndOnAndOnAndOn · 03/02/2012 13:43

another vote for Susannah

not keen on Susan, sorry, for reasons others have mentioned

other suggestions - Zoe? Seren? Saffron? Rowan?

EssieW · 03/02/2012 13:46

I like it. My 33 year old cousin is a Susan, known mostly as Susie. It's original and strong. Also love Susannah.

nearlymumofone · 03/02/2012 20:07

What about Lucy? I know it's nothing like Susan but...

I think Susan is a bit lame, dull and worst of all my MIL's name!!

However, I have a young and very cute cousin called Susie and I think that's lovely.

spanky2 · 03/02/2012 20:12

Who cares if you like it. My Mum said ds1's name sounded like a cowboys name, we still called him it. My Mum is Susan Rosemary. So it is Granny chic! I hope that doesn't put you off.

tummytickler · 03/02/2012 20:27

Susan is lovely, and near the top spot for us if we get a dd. Such a beautiful name, I love how simple and elegant it is, and Susie or Suki is a sweet nn.

crocodilesmiles · 05/02/2012 09:39

Trust your own instincts. Everyone will have their own opinions but it's your baby! If you and your DH like it, go for it and sod the others!

FWIW I think Susan is a nice name. The little girl in Maricle on 34th Street is called Susan and I think it suits a little girl.

You and your DH are going to have to make loads of choices as parents, and no one else will have a say in your decisions, so why should the baby's name be any diiferent?

Susan was the #1 name in 1968

About time there was a revival!

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 05/02/2012 16:12

Agree it's due for a revival - just wait 10 years and it will be fab, and all the Isabella's will be rolling their eyes saying 'mum why did you call me generational equivalent of Sharon'Smile

AThingInYourLife · 05/02/2012 16:19

Agree with Chippy - Susan is cool, and due comeback.

Susannah is also lovely.

Susie is a lovely nn (nb NOT suzi)

What about Elizabeth? Lots of nn possibilities there too.

Lucy?

christinecagney · 05/02/2012 16:21

I' ve been teaching 20 years and never had a Susan or Susannah in my class, really due a revival , cool, understated, suits adult or child, you will be a trend setter!

IslaValargeone · 05/02/2012 16:25

Sorry, it might be 'due a revival' but I think it is beyond dull and completely lacking in imagination.

jandymaccomesback · 05/02/2012 16:43

I know quite a few Susannahs. Very popular with Churchgoing folk. Much prefer it to Susan. Susan belongs with Christine, Pamela, Janet and Linda in the 50s Hall of Fame.

pressingbuttons · 06/02/2012 05:49

STOP! To quote your opening post. "Susan...wasn't my favourite but I could compromise...."
Forget all our opinions here on MN and your mum's; they're all red herrings; it seems to me that really it's not the name you want for your little girl and your mum's stronger opinion has made you think you do. Big of a dig your heels in moment maybe... Make sense?
Susan is a lovely name; my mum is Suzanne and she is called many variants of that (Susie, Sue, Susan) but really 'imho' I just don't think you've found the name you love.....
and islavalargeone; to say the name 'lacks imagination' when I think of all the eve, evies, with grace and rose and mae/mai as mn....seriously? Hmm

CheerfulYank · 06/02/2012 05:57

Another vote for Susannah here. I love it. One of my future daughters will be called Susannah Rose so I can call her Annie Rose as a nn. :) I have heard of a little one recently called Zuzu, which is a very cute nn IMO. Or Susie, Suki, Anna...really can't go wrong!

tammytoby · 06/02/2012 09:43

Susan is a lovely, cassic, feminine name with lots of nicknames and the fact that it isn't 'fashionable' means she won't have to add a modifier or surname initial to her name like all the little Evies, Ellies and Graces have to these days.

IslaValargeone, I would also disagree that Susan lacks imagination - imo it is excactly the opposite and would be a lovely change from all the top 10 names that ARE dull and lacking in imagination.

lisianthus · 06/02/2012 20:49

Susan is a lovely name. It is right up in the top five on my list too. Sad that i can't use it.

BuntyPenfold · 06/02/2012 21:24

I love Susan. Suzanne is not nearly as nice.

pranma · 07/02/2012 17:11

Susan or Susannah-Suzanne isnt as nice-I also like Suki[Sukey] as nn as well as Susie.I think Susan is underused these days.
I know a little girl called Susan Eloise:)

ViviPru · 07/02/2012 17:27

Susan, Susy for short is really cute. Susy seems stronger, somehow than Susie. I prefer -y to -ie as a general rule anyway.
