Is it fashionable again and if so was it ever fashionable? He is six months old.

It's never really been popular has it?

redrubyshoes · 02/02/2012 22:03

Nope. I didn't think so either. Then again I once met a guy in his 30's who was called Kimberly.....................he hated it.

No, it has never been fashionable for a boy. I have known a couple of male Hilary's who would now be in their late 50's. I would presume that their mums didn't know it was starting to become a popular girl's name. It is currently not popular for either sex.

Bigsighfeelingupset · 02/02/2012 22:31

I agree - never has been or ever will be fashionable. I hope he shortens it himself to 'Hil' or somesuch.

NormanTheForeman · 02/02/2012 22:32

I have a sister called Hilary (50), was not a popular name but a few other female Hilarys around in our time. But have only ever heard of one male Hilary (similar age to us) and it's not a popular name (for either gender) these days.......

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 03/02/2012 03:33

There's a (male) politician called Hillary Benn. Poor bastard.

sashh · 03/02/2012 05:18

There's also a Dr Hilary on morning TV

Thumbwitch · 03/02/2012 05:23

Just wondering why you want to know whether or not it's popular? Are you thinking of using it yourself?
A friend of my parents named one of their sons Hilary - but he had another name too and went by both.

redrubyshoes · 03/02/2012 09:13

Thumb

NOT thinking of using it. I really, really don't like it.

I'm with sashh the only male Hilary I know of is the doctor on ITV. And I've always wondered why his parents gave him a female name...

hattymattie · 03/02/2012 09:33

I have an uncle Hilary although he must be in his seventies now. I always thought it was a boys name because of this until experience taught me otherwise. I'd personally steer clear of calling a boy this. Life's confusing enought. My daughter has a boy called Lillian in her class poor blighter.

B52s · 03/02/2012 12:24

Not for a boy, but for a girl, okay. (I am one). Is a fairly unique name without being yoo-neek. Never met any male Hillarys, only 2 other female Hilarys.

justhayley · 03/02/2012 12:41

My mums neighbour is in his 60s and is a Hillary he's the only male one iv heard of and can't say I like it!

littlemissstan · 03/02/2012 12:46

Both my mum and my aunt are called Hilary so always a girl's name to me - but mum named after Sir Edmund to make it more confusing...

TheCuntwormUnderfoot · 03/02/2012 13:23

Actually prefer it for a man, but yes really rare nowadays.

As is Lindsey, Leslie, etc. for a boy.

Minty82 · 03/02/2012 18:23

A boy called Lillian hattymattie?!! That's much more startling...never heard of a Hilary of either sex born after 1960 though!

LynetteScavo · 03/02/2012 18:31

I think Hilary is considered a normal girls name in the US, unlike the UK where is is considered a middle aged lady's name, and very, very rarely a mans name. It's an unusual choice for a baby boy. I don't think it will ever be "fashionable" or even popular for a boy, but who knows.

NoHunIntended · 03/02/2012 18:31

Soozy, I was told by a reliable source that Dr.Hillary was named after Edmund Hillary. He climbed Everest three weeks before Dr.Hillary was born.

CecilyP · 03/02/2012 19:17

That's interesting. Hillary Benn and my other male Hilary were also born in 1953 - though later in the year. However, by 1950, Hilary was already a top 50 girls name in England.
