Gus

just found out I'm having a boy. What is the Mumsnet jury's verdict on Gus? He will be half Dutch and will have a long complicated surname, so the poor thing needs a simple first name that works in both languages.

Love it! Lekkkerrrrrr

Bluestocking · 31/01/2012 13:57

I love it, but couldn't you go for Gustav/Gustave and Gus for short? There are so many great Gustav/es - Mahler, Holst, Klimt, Flaubert, Courbet, Doré - and for me, Gus doesn't quite pass the QC test.

Rhubarbgarden · 31/01/2012 13:57

Ha ha! I think it's Lekker too!

love it. Vetoed by DP Sad

I do really like Gustav, but with a van prefixed surname it's too clumsy. Gus is a stand alone name in Dutch (albeit spelt with the extra u) and the previous head of the UK civil service was a Gus, so I'm not worried about it being too informal.

How about Angus, shortened to Gus?

Bluestocking · 31/01/2012 14:11

You are right, Gus O'Donnell makes it quite usable in a formal context. I didn't realise he is actually Augustine - that's fab! But possibly too longwinded with a long complicated surname. Hope you use it, Gus is a lovely name.

Rhubarbgarden · 31/01/2012 14:14

Is he really an Augustine?! Ha ha I never knew that! I can see why he uses Gus...

I love Gus... it does remind me of the mouse in Cinderella, but he is cute :) Good thinking to have a simple first name.

I think it's great, and very Wodehouse (Fink-Nottle).

I would give a full form though - Augustus?

Fantastic name but I would say that as I have one! He is just Gus. We have a very long surname so wanted a short first name. We have had very positive responses when telling people his name. Go for it, it's great!

LaFilleSurLePont · 31/01/2012 18:15

As a nickname yes,but not as a first name.

SpottyTeacakes · 31/01/2012 18:18

I know a Gus short for Angus I think it's lovely

lisaro · 31/01/2012 18:40

Give him a proper name that can be shortened to Gus. And I have to say - I thought 'Gusset'. Now there's a whole new thread..........Smile

bagelmonkey · 31/01/2012 18:42

I know a Gus, short for Fergus & think Gus is nicer in it's own right.

PopcornBiscuit · 31/01/2012 20:08

I don't like it, sorry.

LaFilleSurLePont · 31/01/2012 20:29

I think Gus is nicer than Fergus too,but then I think Fergus is horrid.

I really like Gus,but more so as a nickname, however if it's a name in its own right in the Netherlands then I'd happily put it on the birth certificate.

HamblesHandbag · 31/01/2012 20:32

Oh, now I liiiiike Fergus!

Popoozle · 31/01/2012 20:34

Gus-set Blush.

It's not something I'd choose myself but I don't hate it. Sorry, that's not very helpful is it Blush.

bagelmonkey · 31/01/2012 21:45

Is Gussifer a name?

sunshinejanuary · 31/01/2012 23:25

Angus shortened to Gus. I think in the UK ,any would think it was a nickname rather than a full name?

Kaekae · 01/02/2012 12:15

I am not keen but I know someone who named their baby this and it did really suit him.

hellokitty123 · 01/02/2012 12:39

I don't really like Gus, sorry. But I do like Gustav very much.

suzikettles · 01/02/2012 12:42

I know a Gus who is name for exactly the same reasons as you. It's a great name Smile

Angus would be one of my potential boy's name choices.
