Sophia. Wink

Montsti · 29/01/2012 07:33

Sophie or Sophia for me - not keen on Saskia - not sure why....I do love Sasha though both for a girl and a boy, but I know a lot of MNetters think it is more of a boy's name...

Clarabumps · 29/01/2012 07:52

Saskia- Sophie is really common. Be prepared for 4 in a class..also its my cats name.

Thumbwitch · 29/01/2012 07:55

Saskia, Clarabumps said what I was going to.
Sophia far nicer than Sophie but still will be shortened to Sophie or Soph

Sasha = lovely name but is short for Alexander/Alexandra (but in Russian, the short name for Alexandra would be Sanya, Sasha is the male shortening)

Fiona is nice, or Shona?

PopcornBiscuit · 29/01/2012 08:09

Sophie (or Sophia). Lovely classic name.

Saskia sounds a bit "harder" in comparison.

Saskia is the nicer of the two. Don't really like Sophie - it is a bit dull, sorry. Have you considered Sylvia/Sylvie?

JUJUBUG · 29/01/2012 11:06

Saskia is a good strong name, i have been thinking of this too! x

Clawdy · 29/01/2012 12:54

Saskia beautiful, the name of Rembrandt's wife! only know one Saskia but many Sophies!

Pinkjenny · 29/01/2012 12:58

I like Saskia and considered it for ds (before I knew he was a ds) but it just reminds me of someone who was on Big Brother.

bemybebe · 29/01/2012 13:06

"but in Russian, the short name for Alexandra would be Sanya"
Never. I am Russian.

TheFallenMadonna · 29/01/2012 13:07

Saskia.

Thumbwitch · 29/01/2012 13:17

bemybebe - I know this is going to sound really rude, but you are wrong - it IS a nickname for Alexandra. scroll down or this lady show this.
It may be old fashioned, but it exists.

Thumbwitch · 29/01/2012 13:18

Obviously the "lady" is not real but still! Grin the name has been used as shown.

HardCheese · 29/01/2012 13:19

Saskia, also because of Rembrandt's wife. And Saskia Reeves. And cool Dutchness.

bemybebe · 29/01/2012 13:48

thumb - sorry I was a bit short earlier. Blush, but to give an anime character as an example of a russian nn to a russian?? Grin
if you ask a russian whether sanya is a male or female nn, absolute majority will say male. girls "sanya" may exist of course but this nn is neither common nor usual for a girl as implied by you, maybe it is common in other countries as Alexander/Alexandra has greek roots, not russian. shura/sasha are perfectly unisex in russian

Thumbwitch · 29/01/2012 13:52

Fair enough, just going on what I was told by my father's Russian friends but that was well over 30 years ago. :)

bemybebe · 29/01/2012 13:56

hmm. i think it is one of these legends... same as Nikita, which is a strictly male name in Russian, but most people think it is a Russian girls name.

bemybebe · 29/01/2012 13:59

I love Sophie. Saskia, though very beautiful and strong, is too Dutch for me.

Thumbwitch · 29/01/2012 14:03

Oh well, I know Nikita is a man's name! No, it's definitely what I was told but am happy to stop arguing the point as you obviously do know far more about it than I do, my info was purely secondhand.

Stars22 · 29/01/2012 15:02

Sophie definatley, My name is Sophie. Not heard of Saskia for a while I only no of one person called saskia in their late 20's, oh also another one on big brother.

kerala · 29/01/2012 15:07

Sophie always make me think of soppy for some reason its not a strong name. Plus there are loads and loads, 4 in DDs pre school class.
