There's been a thread about this name recently so sorry for repeating, I didn't want to hijack someone else's thread though. I think DH is pretty set on naming our second child Catherine if it's a girl, it's a name I initially was happy with but am now having misgivings. As much as it's a beautiful, classic name and goes well with our surname I'm just not bowled over by it like I was with DS's name. I work in a small team with a Catherine and have a bit of a difficult relationship with her, which doesn't help, and I'm also not overly keen on Kate or Katie as a nn (Kitty's out). On the other hand he's gone with my suggestion for a boy's name and has relented to my demand request for a girl to have an extra middle name with special meaning for me. Can someone either persuade me that Catherine's a great name or suggest a viable alternative? There are so many beautiful girl names out there that I wouldn't want to waste an opportunity to name our daughter something that we both love rather than just like. Suggestions of mine which I love but have been rejected include Genevieve, Delphine, Beatrice, Romilly and Thea. We have such different tastes!

Wouldn't do it now - too many will be about given last years wedding.....

Shame as it's a good name!

COuld you make it Katerina or Caitlin or someother slight variation?

LiviaAugusta · 27/01/2012 17:45

I've mentioned using a variation actually so might explore that further. I think Catriona may have been a past suggestion...

We thought about Catherine. I don't really like Katerina or Caitlin (really don't like Caitlin but that's because I've heard it shouted across a supermarket by a fairly rough-looking mum and its kind of spoilt it for me! But we all have our names that get hackles up/remind us of someone/etc).

Funnily enough the name I really wanted was Beatrice (on your list) and I still wish I could have had Beatrice for no 2.

We went for Charlotte in the end!

YY to Catherine becoming popular.

I like it - its DNs name who is named after my Mum, so special within our family.

I get your " just not bowled over by it" as we had the same with DDs name (chosen by DH and DS) which I'm not overly keen on

Louisa, Rebecca, Laura, Juliet, Elizabeth, Georgia, Serena, Lucy, Miranda, Coralie

Hadn't really considered the popularity of Catherine, it really is likely to increase so may be a reason for us to not use it (DS's name is 50-75 level I think in popularity so not unheard of just not hugely common).

There's an infant Catherine in my family. I personally love it.

boohome · 28/01/2012 14:45

Catherine's not necessarily going to become more popular just because of the royal wedding.

The name Diana never became really popular after that royal wedding, and Princess Diana was very famous.

IMO, the popularity's only a point for or against a name if the name is not one you really love.

PopcornBiscuit · 28/01/2012 17:29

I don't think Catherine will become overused. People will assume it will become extra-popular so will avoid it, and it won't be overly popular after all!

thistlemuncher · 28/01/2012 20:10

I'd better not comment then Wink. How long have you got? I'll be watching to see what you decide...

Ahh lovely thread, congratulations Thanks

startail · 29/02/2012 10:08

Congratulations and welcome Catherine.
At last a Mum who can spell!

I've known a Kathryn and a Cathryn and lots of Katherines, but Catherine was the one at infant school and always the spelling I liked best!

(You can spell DD2's name several ways, people get there in the end. Anyway my name is impossible to miss spell and university admin. still managed to.)

EllenParsons · 29/02/2012 17:46

I love the name Catherine, especially with this spelling. Congrats!
