DH loves it (massive merlin fan) and I think it is a nice name, but is it a) a bit girly? b) too associated with merlin?

We already have a Ronan.

I love Emrys but I too am a massive Merlin fan, so am probably a bit biased Grin

I think it goes well with Ronan fwiw.

Its just that I love Ronan because its not common but also not unusual. Would there be spelling/ pronounciation issues with Emrys?

I don't know how you pronounce it, I have to say. :)

WestYorkshirePudding · 23/01/2012 20:53

Sorry, reminds me of emery boards.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 23/01/2012 21:08

I don't watch Merlin so would not associate it with that. I do however come from Wales where it seems to be quite a popular name amongst the farming community, so it says healthy outdoor type to me. I like it.

lola4lee · 23/01/2012 21:30

I have a 90 yr old neighbour called Emrys who tells me everytime i see him that he is from a small village in Wales and he never remembers seeing/meeting me before, so I just associate it with that lol x

Takver · 23/01/2012 21:59

I'd just assume you had Welsh connections. Doesn't sound at all girly to me & I've never seen Merlin.

PopcornBiscuit · 23/01/2012 23:21

I haven't heard of it, but when I saw the thread assumed it was a girls' name (like Dilys, Glenys etc.)

yellowflowers · 23/01/2012 23:25

How do you pronounce it? If pronounced as it looks then lovely. Never seen Merlin and reckon you can assume most his generation won't have.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 23/01/2012 23:32

It's pronounced Em-riss as far as I know (at least that's how the Beeb has it Grin)

DilysPrice · 23/01/2012 23:33

I'm assuming it's pronounced Em-Riss am I right? If it's Em-Rhuss then that would be trickier.

Doesn't float my boat personally but there's nothing actually wrong with it, so why not?

This. I like it, unusual in most places in the world but a proper name, strong sounding.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 24/01/2012 09:00

Dilys - yes it is pronounced Em-riss. Like Dil-iss ;)

campergirls · 24/01/2012 09:07

Love it, would have been my pick for a ds if we'd had one. Makes me think of strong, decent, kind Welsh blokes - every Emrys I've known has fitted that description!

marshmallowpies · 24/01/2012 10:41

I definitely think of it as a strong Welsh manly name, can't imagine anyone thinking it sounds feminine! (is that just because a name starting in Em makes people think of Emma?)

Having said that, the only one I've known personally was a relative of my ex who was an, um, interesting character. But I still think it's a great name!

Willabywallaby · 24/01/2012 10:44

I'm with WestYorkshirePudding sorry
