Love Hamish but we're not Scottish?

I'm only in early pregnancy so feel like a bit of a fraud even thinking of names at the minute. I love Hamish but I'm not Scottish (English from Irish heritage), DH is English with a smidge of Scottish way back.

Don't want to seem like I'm trying hard, or a bit of a fake/fraud by going with Hamish when it's such a Scottish name.

I don't think it's a problem with this particular name. Gorgeous btw! I find it a bit strange when people go for non-mainstream "foreign" names that sound very foreign though so understand why you're asking..

TeacupTempest · 22/01/2012 12:23

I am not Scottish but that was our chosen name for a boy. Had a girl though.

scottishmummy · 22/01/2012 12:31

its a great name,on that basis use it

CecilyP · 22/01/2012 12:34

I don't see it as a problem at all. Scottish names have often achieved considerable popularity in England, like Donald and Douglas in the 1920s, Malcolm and Duncan in the 1950s and Callum, Cameron and Ewan in the present day. So it you like it; go for it.

Fantastic name, I have one and am not Scottish, husband is though - just wanted to brag really. I have never met a nasty one and think it is a great choice wherever you come from. Don't know how helpful that is. Hope your pregnancy goes well.

I'd wonder why you didn't just pick the English version, James.

EsmeWeatherwax · 22/01/2012 18:34

I'm Scots and Hamish is high on our list of prospective names, but I also think James sounds quite Scottish too. Use it if you like it, its a great name!

TeacupTempest · 22/01/2012 18:53

James may be the English version but it sounds like a very different name...

eatyourveg · 22/01/2012 19:03

Love the name - so what if you're not scottish - there isn't a rule decreeing that you can't use a name unless you hail from its place of origin. Go with it - its fab!

lagrandissima · 22/01/2012 19:04

How about as a middle name if you feel a bit 'fake' otherwise?

PoppadumPreach · 22/01/2012 19:06

I am Scottish (if that's relevant) and I don't see any problem whatsoever with you using that name!

nearlymumofone · 22/01/2012 19:18

I'm not keen on the name James and to me it's a completely different name. I like Seamus, but it's still completely different from Hamish IMO.

Thanks for all your replies, I've stuck it on my list. DH has already turned his nose up, so I doubt it'd end up being 'the one' anyway!

Love it! Wanted it for our ds but ended up with hector which I love too. Both are manly names which they will grow into nicely.

nearlymumofone · 22/01/2012 19:24

marilyn I'm liking Hector too. Yes very strong names.
