Branwen - I'd appreciate your thoughts

Hi

DH and I are in the very early stages of deciding on names (I'm only 14 weeks). I came across Branwen in the girl's section of a names book yesterday and I absolutely love it (for a DD). I'd appreciate your thoughts - please be gentle, it's my first time on these boards.

Thanks

I'd think it was supposed to be Bronwen but spelt wrong.

coccyx · 19/01/2012 17:19

A box of cereal

Kendodd · 19/01/2012 17:20

I have only heard of Bronwen as well, and I don't like it, sorry.

Don't go on my opinion though Smile

makinglemonade · 19/01/2012 17:24

Is it welsh? I'm not keen sorry.

Mrsrobertduvall · 19/01/2012 17:33

I have a cousin called Branwen...not my fave Welsh name.
Love Eirwen, Carys, Nia, Eirlys, Delyth, Rhian.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/01/2012 17:37

Not over-fond, sorry. It sounds like the name for a small furry character, maybe a Womble or something. But do ignore me and choose what you like!

Cyrli · 19/01/2012 17:38

I like Branwen, not too keen on Bronwen. Both are acceptable spellings in Wales. Branwen was a character in the Mabinogion.

chimchar · 19/01/2012 17:41

i know one. she is awesome, therefore it is a good name, iykwim?

meditrina · 19/01/2012 17:41

I see it as rather a surname (DH Lawrence influence!)

Littlecherublegs · 19/01/2012 17:43

Not heard of Branwen but do like Bronwyn. Would be on our shortlist if it went with our surname!

GoldenDaffodil · 19/01/2012 17:55

Thanks for you feedback. It is indeed a welsh name and if we use it we would use the Branwen rather than Bronwen spelling. I'm welsh but my partner isn't and I'm really keen on welsh names. I also like Cerys and Rhiannon but DH is very supportive of Branwen. We live in London though and I fear many people will share your dislike.

Littlecherublegs · 19/01/2012 18:05

Go for it if you and DH really like it. Besides, you might not stay in London forever!

Other lovely Welsh names I like are:
Ceri
Catrin
Iola
Seren

thrillahkillah · 19/01/2012 18:06

it makes me think of fibre-rich porridge, unforch. Bronwen is better.

Having said that, it's definitely not one of my favourite Welsh names. Cerys and Rhiannon are way way nicer imo.

MissCoffeeNWine · 19/01/2012 18:07

Sorry but I just mentally follow it with the tagline

'How to get more fibre in your diet'

siilk · 19/01/2012 18:07

I like it. I have a Rhodri and a Brychan, I do love welsh names.

GoldenDaffodil · 19/01/2012 18:25

siilk I love Rhodri and Brychan :)

I've taken the cereal comments on board.

I'm not keen at all. Love Cerys though.

From experience I would advise to not actually decide on a name until you meet baby - sometimes they don't 'suit' a particular name. Have a short list and see which suits.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy Smile

NewYearsRevolution · 19/01/2012 18:52

I would probably assume it was a male name - have only heard Bronwen for a girl.

But that said, if you like it, go for it. I have heard horrid comments about both DD's names on here (plus people who love them). I love them though. Whatever you choose, it will be her name, and who she is will shape what people who know her think of the name.

My secret name crush is Angharad (sp?), but I would never use since it since I'm not Welsh.

ScoutJemAndBoo · 19/01/2012 20:10

Bronwen or Briony are much better

GoldenDaffodil · 19/01/2012 20:11

Thanks for the advice littlecherublegs fivefoot and newyears very helpful. You won't be surprised to hear that this is my first baby so I'm very new to this naming business. I'll keep looking but Branwen is definitely on my short list despite its marmite effect.

I like Anwen, can nn Annie but still keepig the welsh heritage :)

HouseworkProcrastinator · 19/01/2012 20:17

I went to school with a branwen, she was lovely. Also in school with me was a myfanwy, an angharad and a myreon guess where I live... hehe

Welsh names sound pretty I think.

londonmackem · 19/01/2012 20:19

I know a welsh Branwen and she does sometimes get Bronwen but I like it - but she is lovely which helps.

GoldenDaffodil · 19/01/2012 20:40

I love Welsh names, I think they sound really pretty too so it's nice that some of you agree with me :) I've been reflecting on the cereal comments all evening and I respectfully disagree.
