I'm German. DH is irish.
As surname will be very irish, we have agreed that DCs will get a German first name.
I was thinking a relatively simple German name or a name used in both German and English

DH has come home today after making his shortlist.
But he really thinks that 'the name' is in this list and wants me to put it to you lot.

Please please be honest

Girls

Hedwig
Ebba
Jutta
Ortrun
Elfriede

Boys

Jochim
Bertram
Dietrich
Dietfried
Ekkehard/Eckehard

I like Otto, Stein, and Kurt for boys too if Josef is no good. However as it can be pronounced just like Joseph then I don't see much problem.

Eglu · 18/01/2012 22:17

How about Axel/Axl

EverybodysSnowyEyed · 18/01/2012 22:19

Well he can have a 'proper' German name without it being ugly!!!

Of your list I don't think Joachim, Elfriede or bertram sound obviously German

Heidi/Hansel/Greta

zeegilly, I think cases like this are why the concept of vetoes exists :)

I am not German, though I lived there for a couple of years. I'm sorry but those names are terrible. Please 'help' him reconsider! or failing that register the name you like when he's not there

yashie · 18/01/2012 22:24

Oh i love angelica. OP your husband has thought of the fact that your child had to go to school in the uk hasn't he? Picking a name my child wouldn't be bullied for I'd much more important than what country it sounds like it came from I think... X

MmeLindor. · 18/01/2012 22:25

I have a German husband and lived in Germany for many years. I think his names are very old fashioned awful but at least they are not Tim, Lena, Marie, Jonas, Max... Like 70% of German dc at the moment.

I would go with Katharina, Constanze kind of names.

I do think that German names show much more regional variations, and his names sound quite Norddeutsch.

I love the name Lioba, which is very southern German but pretty. Short version Lio.

Avoid anything ending in -e like ute, Renate cause Brits can't pronounce and your dd will be known as ootie

PacificDogwood · 18/01/2012 22:26

Why is your Irish DH suggesting German names? Confused

I do like Oirish names , but have recently suggested to DH we should have named our boys Raven, Wolf, Bear and Griffin Grin.
Sorry, not v helpful, I know

EverybodysSnowyEyed · 18/01/2012 22:26

Have to agree with Yashie. DH is German and has had some abuse because of it from adults (!) so we decided the surname was enough for the kids. Sad really. But then i also wanted to reflect my heritage in their names!

EverybodysSnowyEyed · 18/01/2012 22:27

And as Mme Lindor says - -ate names will be pronounced wrong and spelt with an a at the end!

yashie · 18/01/2012 22:28

Loads of lovely German names here... www.babynameworld.com/german.asp
Alaric is awesome and you could get away with it easy thanks to Vampire Diaries!! X

RillaBlythe · 18/01/2012 22:29

Hedwig and the Angry Inch! Great film. Think I'd leave the name though

seren82 · 18/01/2012 22:30

Ebba and Elfriede and Dietrich are nice I think. I actually taught an Adolphe last year (pronounced Adolf). Luckily, he left before we started our World War Two topic...

I vote for Elfriede - gorgeous and Elfie for a little girl is lovely!

pixiestix · 18/01/2012 22:49

Best baby name thread title ever!

fridakahlo · 18/01/2012 22:50

Well, for a start, Frida!
Don't like any of the girls names, sorry.
I had relatives called Sigrid (pronounced see-greet) and Ilsa/Ilse. Also Gretchen, seems very populer in the states (not that that is a recommendation necessarily). And Gretel, not too keen on it myself but its not been mentioned yet).
On the boys list my fave is Joachim followed by Bertram (Wooster!) And Dietrich.

TeWihara · 18/01/2012 22:51

I like Konrad and Sofie.

Do you live in Germany? Because I am not German, live in the UK and would fail attrociously at pronouncing any of his choices.

MmeLindor. · 18/01/2012 22:58

Frida
I suggested Gretchen when pregnant and DH laughed like a drain. Said it was v old fashioned and farmer-wife-ish

Knew a family whose kids were Anton, Greta and Frieda. Fab names.

Anorher family - Berenike, Rebekkah, Torben and Vivianne

fridakahlo · 18/01/2012 23:24

Torben is nice, was Berenike a girl or a boy?
(A confused smiley should be here but the device refuses to let me put a lower case c after the square brackets)
