After going round in circles quite a lot, DH and I have come back to the name Duncan.

previous thread

It had come up before in random reading out of names from book and DH said no , I wasn't sure as I know a fairly unpleasnant 'Dunc'. (Although I don't see him much.)

It's come up again and he's now quite keen.

it would be Duncan Allan .

a) what do you think
b) any similar suggestions?

Cheers :)

I love it. I think in Scotland it's not at all out of fashion.

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 07:36

i guess it just makes me think Mole. :)

I may be showing my considerable age but Dunky was a condom in my day ....

Is that maybe a regional thing Labootin? Never ever heard of it up here.

I'm from London and dunky was definitiely a rubber johnny.

PercyFilth · 17/01/2012 11:31

Duncan sounds like someone kicking an empty bucket Hmm

Graham?
Stuart?
Gordon?

evamummy · 17/01/2012 11:55

I think you're ahead of the curve with Duncan and that it will rise in popularity as people look for more 'solid' names (after all the cutesy Alfie, Archie, Charlie type names). Find, solid, classic name imo!

evamummy · 17/01/2012 11:58

Why would you shorten Duncan?

The one I know never gets called anything other than Duncan - it rolls off the tongue easily, doesn't it?

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 11:59

How about Dunstan? Then you could have the possibility of Stan as a nn. Like that.

I am not going to leave this thread Grin.
Dunstan puts me in mind of a film that DD watches. It has a chimp in it.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 12:24

But presumably the chimp could be called Stan instead of having to be called Dunk.

I have two good friends called Gavin and Adrian though.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 12:25

I know a few Duncans too. Hmm. It's a bit dated. Sorry kreecher.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 12:26

How about Dominic?

Kveta · 17/01/2012 12:30

it's a great name so long as your surname isn't donut. I knew a few when I was at school, and never heard it shortened.

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 13:08

I work in a really nicknamey place, so I guess I'd expect people to shorten it whether I liked it or not IYSWIM.

percy

Graham?
Stuart?
Gordon?

That wee list has a cousin and a close family friend in it so I wouldn't want to use them. :) Gordon is an ok name but just not right.

Duncan is nice in a solid, manly sort of way, but I prefer Douglas. Could you not persuade your DH into it? Otherwise my suggestions would be Fraser,
Alexander (Sandy) or Ross which I thinkhave a similar flavour (apologies if already suggested, not read whole of previous thread)

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 13:29

Would like to have Ross but DH not keen at all. Know a wee Fraser that I see all the time unfortunately!

Alexander is one of those ones that reminds me of annoying people too.

Will maybe work on Douglas as I am kind of talking myself out of Duncan (sorry Kreecher Wink )

Struan
Murray
Angus
Keir

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 13:50

Not keen on Struan, Angus, Keir (sorry I'm a fussy bugger), really like Murray but know a wee one of them too. :)

Magnus.

Chesticles · 17/01/2012 13:55

Sorry, I find boys names really tricky, so that is about my list! My favourite is still Douglas though.

I wouldn't worry too much about already knowing children with the same name (unless it is close family). If you like a name, go for it. Otherwise you're restricting the pool of nice names a lot and finding a nice boy's name is tricky enough without any extra barriers!

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 14:01

Mungo
Roderick (in order to get Roddy - brill nn)
Murdo

Douglas is not great...
