Hello! We used up our favourite boys name 3 years ago with our son Archie and now have four weeks to decide on a name for his brother. We want another 'Grandad' sounding name (I've been through my family tree but not found anything) and it has to match our unusual surname, which is q similar to the famous actor Bernard who was in Doctor Who.

Friends and family have already used the most popular; William, Henry, Frank and so on. Plus I want something a bit more unusual.

I'm getting a bit desperate as my husband wants to call him Ernie.

I want to avoid another 'ie' name, want one that only has one spelling (after 37 years I am sick of having to spell out 'Claire') and don't want anything beginning with W (initials would be WC). I am also not keen on names that people instantly abbreviate. Picky aren't I?!?

I am fed up of reading baby name books and would love some help.

Many many thanks

My Archie was nearly Angus, frank, Oscar or Benedict. I love stanley, Basil, Fergus and Montgomery, But George goes nicely with Archie too.

gforgiraffe · 17/01/2012 10:03

We like George and Arthur. Also recently heard of Sebastian, Raphael, Alistair, Alfie, Archie, Elwood, Saul, Edmund, Stanley, Jeremiah, Zachary .....

TinkerMaloo · 17/01/2012 11:00

Sydney or George

MyOhMyOh · 17/01/2012 11:08

Monty is nice.

I heard a woman calling her toddler Nigel a few months ago Shock Too far, Nigel's Mum, too far

Arthur or Stanley are great names. (in my opinion).

hubbahubster · 19/01/2012 11:04

Another vote for Stanley here.

The old men in my family are/were Gerald, Leslie, Geoffrey, Peter, Jabez, David, Raymond, Horace, Ron, Frazer... Oh, and Stanley! Does that help?

Arthur is lovely! What about Seth? Frederick, Albert, Wilfred?

JobCarHouseNoBaby · 19/01/2012 12:49

Grandparent's names from our family:

Ernest (shortened to Ern)
Charley (NOT Charles)
John (boring)
Emmanuel (Manny)

I'm not a big fan of old-fashioned names but do know some teens with the following names which make them pretty unique:

Albert (shortened to Albie)
Frederick (shortened to Freddy)
George
Edward (Ed or Ted)
Hugh
Edwin
Patrick

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 19/01/2012 12:51

Actually I quite like John? Could it be due a comeback?

FebreezeYourJeans · 19/01/2012 14:32

I know 3 Johns under 5yrs.
