DH and I have decided on a name we both like for DC2. I just looked it up to make sure it doesn't mean pursuer of anteaters or one who believes horoscopes, and discovered that it means rival :o which seems very appropriate for a second child :o

Did you chose names based on their meaning, or discover the meaning later?

mine means flower goddess, and DH's means celebration of spring, and DS's means olive tree. All a bit dull really! what do your and your DC's names mean?!

both my children's names are very meaningful to us for various reasons, dd's name means Earth and ds's bright/exalted.

Meaning is very important to me when choosing a name - otherwise you are just choosing a selection of letters with a nice sound! For example, I would not call a child Claudia (lame) or Cecilia (blind) as the meanings are not particularly nice.

My first born son's name basically means "look! it's a boy! seriously!"

This was not intentional. But is quite funny.

My name is very battle focused words, (lion-like/warrior etc) I don't think this was intentional either, but I am very combative in some ways. I think it suits Grin

:o at TeWihara! great meaning!

boyfalling, I chose DS's name because I love the sound of it - it just rolls nicely in the mouth and it sounds happy to me :) DC2's name is another that I love the sound of. The meanings were not especially important to us, so long as they weren't religious names, and they could be spelled the same in english and DH's language!!

My (real) name is very special to me as it meant so much to my parents.

They adopted me so called me Victoria as it means victory and they said they saw me as their victory after 13 years of ttc and going through adoption process.

They are also catholic and I was born in may so you can imagine what my middle name is and why they chose t Wink

I like the story behind why they called me it.

My dd however will not get such a nice
Story. When she asks why she got her name I will have to say 'because daddy is a stubborn old git' Grin

My eldest DD is 'ruler of the home', my DS is 'good with his hands' and little DD is 'happy'!

SE13Mummy · 16/01/2012 00:26

My eldest DD is also 'home ruler'!

DD2's name means 'wished for child'... she was (as, of course, was DD1) but DD2 was wished for after lots of failed pregnancies and being told that a 2nd child was extremely unlikely.

Both my name and dd's are variant forms of other names with several meanings on offer depending which baby book you read (and my name is only in a few in any case). ds is 'elf council' and dh is "to heal".

I don't think that meaning was a major factor in any of the naming decisions. dd and ds were named after family and historical figures respectively.

Kveta · 16/01/2012 09:38

nooka I think DS's name also means elf council, but wikipedia says it means Olive tree now, which seems less ridiculous to me :o (I would guess you also have a DS with a very popular name?!)

I love the idea of a child called 'home ruler' :o

Kayano, that's a lovely story :)

The meaning was an important aspect of choosing DD's name. It didn't have to be perfect, but a nice, positive meaning. It means 'light'.

tummytickler · 16/01/2012 10:39

dd1 means 'rainbow', ds1 name means 'My God is Yahweh' dd2 is Pearl, and ds2 means 'carried'.
I like all the meanings behind their names, but would not be too fussed about it to be honest! I would more be put off using a name I would otherwise like if I had a negative association with a name, than if the meaning wasn't great.
