Seren

DH is Welsh, I am English. We are expecting DC2 in the summer, not had 20 week scan yet so early days really and not sure if girl or boy yet. We've both always loved the welsh name Seren for if we had a second DD (our daughter also has a welsh name). My (english) mum states "no darling, it sounds like that Sarin gas they poisoned people with in Japan". I think she's bonkers to say this and have asked a few other English people who had no such reaction. Whilst I adore my mum I'm unconvinced I should be relying on her opinion as to what to name a DC2 but just wondered if this was likely to be a common reaction

Well, I immediately thought 'geti'.

HTH

Err, no, your mum is bonkers!

I'm english but did spend seven years in Wales at Uni and working. Seren is lovely, beautiful meaning & is a welsh name that works really well for the non welsh!

Or what about...
Celyn
Eleri
Nia
Rhian
Cerys/Carys
Megan

ViviPru · 14/01/2012 18:44

Never heard of that (I'm 32 - maybe a greneration thing?)

Love LOVE the name, but its becoming very popular. Its been popping up all over this board a lot recently. I think its heading for the top of the charts. but if that doesn't bother you, then its great - go for it :)

DilysPrice · 14/01/2012 18:46

Lovely, easy to spell and pronounce, and I think it's only ever going to be an Anglo-Welsh thing, so you won't have 5 in an English class.

scottishmummy · 14/01/2012 18:47

Seren is really nice

Bonsoir · 14/01/2012 18:50

It makes me think of Soren, spelt wrong! And Soren is a really boring name for Swedish or Danish men!

salvadory · 14/01/2012 18:53

Lovely name, I'm in the north west and I know 3 under 2. It's pretty, easy to say and not too popular. Don't listen to your mum, I wouldnt think sarin for a second.

gladbag · 14/01/2012 18:57

I have a friend with a 7 year old Seren. All the associations mentioned have never occurred to me. I think it's lovely.

TheHappyCamper · 14/01/2012 19:00

I like it. I only heard of it recently. It's the name of the bat on that ceebeebies cartoon Abadaz - DD loves her! Smile I think it's different without being wacky or weird.

Grockle · 14/01/2012 19:09

I love it. DS would have been Seren (or Carys) had he been a girl.

winkygirl · 14/01/2012 19:20

I know a Seren, doesn't it mean "star" in Welsh? Beautiful.
Could always go for Serena?

duckdodgers · 14/01/2012 19:25

grockle my last DS would have been a Seren to if he had been a girl Grin I know its Welsh and Im Scottish but I just loved the name.

Grockle · 14/01/2012 19:25

Yes, it means star. Lovely.

Ephiny · 14/01/2012 19:29

I think it's lovely. No negative associations at all for me.

Superene · 14/01/2012 19:31

How about Serena instead? V unusual.

TidyDancer · 14/01/2012 19:32

I immediately thought of the gas, I will admit. Sorry. :( So no, your mum is not bonkers.

There are some lovely Welsh names, but this isn't one of them for me. It looks unfinished. Celyn is very pretty if you are set on the Welsh theme.

Raisedonadietofbrokenbiscuits · 14/01/2012 19:53

I love it. It's a beautiful name. I know two Serens (I'm Welsh) and they are both beautiful too. Go for it!

TwllBach · 14/01/2012 22:25

I'm English but have lived in Wales for nearly six years and think it is a lovely name and one of the few welsh names that work well in England. I've grown to love Elin but wonder if we ever moved back to England whether people would just think I couldn't spell Ellen!

Bellie · 15/01/2012 09:27

Never thought of the gas, but as ViviPru says, it is becoming more popular.

There are 2 in my sons swimming class of 12 (under 3's) and it is popping up on here a lot. We are nowhere near Wales btw.

Bluestocking · 15/01/2012 09:38

Sorry, your mum is bonkers! I remember the sarin gas business, but I would never have made the association with the name Seren. It's a beautiful name and works well for English speakers.

AntsMarching · 15/01/2012 09:43

That's one of the names on my short list for dd2. Dd1 also a welsh name and as I'm not welsh (DH is), I'm insisting on names easy for my family to spell/pronounce.

pixiestix · 15/01/2012 09:51

Its a beautiful name! It is definitely increasing in popularity though.

Kayzr · 15/01/2012 09:52

It's a beautiful name and on our short list for this baby as DP is Welsh

morethemerrier · 15/01/2012 10:52

Love it! Love the meaning, sounds pretty and would love to use it but having no welsh connections would feel a bit of a fraud!

Probably will rise in popularity due to the cbeebies programme (where I first heard it) but if you like it go for it!
