How many to expect in each class/ year?

Approximately how many girls with these names do you think there will be in each school year when our new DD starts school - ie in 5 years time?

Emily
Lily
Molly
Alice

Basically I'm trying to see how the name statistics translate into real life! Feel free to pass opinion on the names or suggest others.

Thanks

You can't really tell but it you CAN have a look at the statistics for births in 2010 and see what percentage of girls are named your suggested names.

The names are all fairly popular. Personally I prefer Alice and think it the least 'trendy'.

Who knows? In 5 years time any name could become more or less popular because of a celeb or news story and these things do vary across the country.

However, Lily is incredibly popular and I would be amazed if a Lily going to school in 5 years time was the only one in her class.

pixiestix · 13/01/2012 14:52

Hundreds! All very popular names in my circle. Molly and Alice marginally less popular than Lily and Emily imo.

I know in my DD's "school year" (she's only 11m but ykwim):

Emily - 4
Lily - 1
Molly - 0
Alice - 2

More popular still are:

Isobel (and variants) - 5
Florence - 3
Evie (and hypenated variants) - 3
Darcey - 3
Grace - 3

I think it's pretty regional though - no Ava's round here for example and I haven't come across any Olivia's or Jessica's either. There's a general Old Lady theme - things like Elsie, Edie, Florence. In fact I'd probably include all of the above, except Darcey, in the Old Lady theme.

In toddler groups I go to..

Emily x2
Lily x1
Molly x 0
Alice x 0

i think molly and Alice would be the only one in the class but that is just a guess. Lily and Emily may well have 2 of per class. Isabelle/Evie/Emma/Darcey/Lucy/Mia/Harry/Jack/Thomas/Oliver are probably most popular where i live.

Emilyx 1
Lily x 2

There are more boys called whatever the top boys name is than girls called whatever the top girls name is.....

I think in a class of 30 kids - with 15 girls it's fairly unlikely that they'll be more than 2 of any one name.

All of my 3 have names which were in the top 20 of that year - and they've never been in the same class as someone with that name.

vitaminC · 13/01/2012 16:51

They're all pretty popular right now, but Alice is a timeless classic, whereas the others are trendy and will sound dated in a few years, IMO.

But, like others have said, there's no way of knowing if an unusual name will suddenly become popular in the next couple of years...

My Olivia is a teenager and when we named her, I'd only ever met one person with that name (who was my age). I had no idea it would suddenly take off over the following decade :(

DS had at least four Emilys including one who spelled it Emilie in his class. He also had two Rachels and two Sarahs.

DD4 at the moment has two Sarahs and four Rachels in hers. Plus one Emilia.

Lily, Alice and Molly -- there are three Mollys in the school, no Lily or Alice.

Isobel and alternative spellings -- five.

Several Olivias.

Mind you, DD4 has a very unusual name, and we met the only other one we have ever met the day she started school, in her class. They are friends.
