Meyer?

I know I know - I've done this before, but wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts!

Potted history - DH likes names with meaning, and that have a story behind them for DC's. DS1 is Hector = good husband, good father, strong nad courageous warrior in Greek myth when the 1st 2 were rare!

DS2 due in a couple of months. My DF is of Jewish descent (renounced and non-practising) and his 'jewish' name is Meyer.

We both really like the sound of the name. it goes well with DS1 and with our surname.

BUT... is it cruel and unusual punishment?

We dont name until smalls are out, so it might be that it doesn't suit him at all, but i just wanted to gather peoples opinions on the name for the names sake if that makes sense.

Seems more like a surname to me but then I don't know any Jewish people, first thing I thought was are you a twilight fan, I suppose it's pretty inoffensive but I think the deeper meaning will be lost on most people.

TheSurgeonsMate · 13/01/2012 11:16

I don't know what the meaning is, but I like the name for the name's sake.

I like it but it is the name of a saucepan brand.

ScottOfTheArseAntics · 13/01/2012 11:33

Yes HereIGo he was called Jan Meyer.

Meyer is a (Jewish) first name for a boy. It is quite 'old', I haven't met anybody under the age of 80 called Meyer. Not that this is a reason to avoid it of course. I like Manny, short for Emannuel, if I'd had another boy that would have been his name.

campergirls · 13/01/2012 11:39

It sounds a lot like the v popular girl's name Maya/Maia/Mia - would that bother you?

instantfamily · 13/01/2012 11:40

In german it means Miller.

It sounds very Jewish to me. Unless you are German (like me) and then it just sounds silly as a first name because it is one of the most common surnames in Germany. But I guess you are not in Germany, so ...

LotusPalm · 13/01/2012 11:41

Hi scott - my dad is 80, so that explains a lot! I really like old man names as well, but DH veto's all of them!

He doesn't actually go under that name, an we wouldn't ever name him directly for DF (if that makes sense) but we both like the name, think its unusual but not pretentious and would love to honour my dad like this. Not that he'll be that bothered, but its more for us.

And he is 80, so will be a long-lasting reminder of my DH when the time comes...

instant - not really as they are pronounced Mia and this is pronounced as its written (m-ay-er) so think they are quite different.

but would other people know that? We would be setting him up for a life of spelling all his names though, as our surname seems to be challenging for most people. It is a biblical name though, so makes sense i suppose.

We were also thinking of giving a more 'normal' middle name so that he had a choice when he gets older. None of us have middle names, so would be a break, but wouldn't mind if it gave him choice when he was older...

Damn abrev.

hugebump3 · 13/01/2012 11:49

Sounds surnamey to me too. As instant said, would be very odd for him if ever spent much time in Germany as it is a VERY common surname (I thought Müller was a miller though), probably like being called Jones or Smith in the UK.

rebecklet · 13/01/2012 11:50

One of DHs cousins is called Meyer and she is a girl - they pronounce it Mia, so for me it will always be a girls name and I have no idea why they spelt it like that when they chose her name.

instantfamily · 13/01/2012 12:00

Sorry, meier is to do with dairy not with flour!

ScottOfTheArseAntics · 13/01/2012 12:04

Well I quite like it. To me it is a perfectly legitimate first name for a boy of Jewish descent even if it has dropped out of use lately.

laptopwieldingharpy · 13/01/2012 12:05

I love it. I like all the reasons laid out.
Go for it!

laptopwieldingharpy · 13/01/2012 12:09

Means the light, the beacon, the leader right?
A bit overshadowing for ds1 Maybe?
Don't worry, years before they figure it out!

ReneeVivien · 13/01/2012 12:19

Love Meyer.

LotusPalm · 13/01/2012 14:02

laptop - poor DS1! He's got a pretty good back storey to his name though, so not too worried abotu that.

Do you think a middle name is necessary, or does it smack of indecision?!

LotusPalm · 13/01/2012 19:26

Story!

Dammit, I can spell really...

OP posts:
LotusPalm · 15/01/2012 16:07

Anyone have thoughts in middle name or not?

Should we (if we do name him this) just have the courage if our convictions?

Confused
