Want Sam for a girl, is it short for anything apart from Samantha?

Pregnant with DC4, gave away all my baby name books as we were stopping at 3 but... I love Sam for a girl or boy but don't like Samantha, can it be short for anything else? If I have a boy it would be Sam short for Samuel but cannot think of girls names that get shortened to Sam except Samantha.
Any suggestions?

Samara is a beautiful name, heard it from samara weaving, stunning actress of home and away fame, thought basically nobody over here would know her name so its almost totally unique :) trying to think of other similar names...cant think?

Polkadotfanatic · 13/01/2012 10:36

Samaire - there is an actress called Samaire Armstrong. It's pronounced Sameera. Quite pretty...

I know a Samia, her Dad's lebanese, and I think it's an arabic name.

crocodilesmiles · 13/01/2012 10:45

Samia Smith plays Maria in Coronation Street. Nice name a cobination of Sam and Mia

Littlecherublegs · 13/01/2012 11:47

I like Samia or Samara - much better than Samantha IMO

woolly76 · 13/01/2012 13:54

Saami or sami is a tribe in northen norway i thought that was quite a cool name for a girl!

BackToBligg · 13/01/2012 13:56

Samuela. Italian.

startail · 13/01/2012 14:29

You need a M surname. Then you can have Sophie Anne or whatever.
Mind you the girl I knew with those initials exploded if you called her Sam.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/01/2012 14:35

'tis also Thai for three.

FetaCheeny · 13/01/2012 20:22

This probably isn't helpful but I love the name Samantha, my friends daughter is Samantha Anne and gets called Samianne, so cute.

Another vote for Samara - I love it, it's on my imaginary shortlist for DC4 (although we're not having any more) Sad

BobbieSox · 13/01/2012 20:36

I know a Samreen, I see that's not been suggested yet

MissPenteuth · 13/01/2012 21:10

I like the Gaelic Samaire, pronounced Sameera.

MissPenteuth · 13/01/2012 21:11

Whoops, just realised Polkadotfanatic beat me to it Blush

guinealady · 13/01/2012 23:10

Duh - it hadn't occurred to me that my made-up name Samella was only a few letters away from being salmonella!! Shock

Thank goodness I made clear it wasn't a serious suggestion...

Samaris and Damaris...eurgh! But I do quite like Samia.

DottieRose · 13/01/2012 23:25

would Sabine or Sabina be a stretch to make Sam a nickname?

workshy · 13/01/2012 23:30

Ladyemem · 13/01/2012 23:47
