I love it. We have French family connections so would be meaningful too.

Guessing he'd get called 'Zave' or 'Zavey' as a nickname.

Do you think Brits would have a problem pronouncing?

Likely to be thought of as cool or a bit of a weird name at school? I'm losing the ability to judge...

I like it although he might get called Chav at school because it sounds so similar.

ditavonteesed · 12/01/2012 16:51

is an awful name, and I like odd names.

user59457812 · 12/01/2012 16:52

Why is it awful? Good to understand different points of view!

might just be me but sounds to much like a super hero name.

Ha ha - on an episode of Big Bang Theory the other night I discovered it's the name of the handler of the X-Men, I had no idea.

It's quite a common French name, esp. in the South, with ancient connections to the Basque country. The other association had never occurred to me...

How would you say it? Zavier, havier, or as I believe happens in America, x- avier? I like it, anyway.

Marinn · 12/01/2012 17:16

I think it's a great name, I doubt there would be much trouble with the pronunciation as there are a few well known footballers with the name.

It's nice, cool but still a classic.

albertswearingen · 12/01/2012 17:16

My sil has included this name for her ds and they pronounce it x-avier and noone but us seems to think it's wrong- so you'd have to be prepared for weird pronounciations. It is a nice name.

user59457812 · 12/01/2012 17:46

We would pronouce it as 'Zavier', and then take whatever 'traditional' pronunciation the French throw at it when we're over there!

I've notice Americans say 'X-avier', which is a bit annoying but then my name is pretty run of the mill and seems to get said differently in every country I go to which has never actually bothered me...

I love it, we had it on our short list and now our next door neighbour has called their son Xavier.

duchesse · 12/01/2012 18:03

Love it!

Fo0ffyShmo0ffer · 12/01/2012 18:08

I love this name. Was on my list for DD.

Grockle · 12/01/2012 18:08

Yes, my American friends have an Xavier - to the Mexican mum, he is Havier, to the American Dad, he is Ex-avier

mybootsaremuddy · 12/01/2012 18:51

Love it. Ours is 10(we prn it 'Zay-vee-er')he loves it also. He is know as Xave/Xavie or more often now as 'Vee' as when his cousin was learning to talk this is what he called him and it just stuck!

user59457812 · 12/01/2012 18:56

Myboots - great to hear you are using it 'for real' and he loves it! We'd pronouce it in the same way and call him Xave/Xavie (Vee is very cute too).

My DH has an unusual name which everyone now thinks is very cool and different (quite often comes up in the 'hipster' lists on here) but he had literally never met another one until he was 30 and I think he got a bit of stick for it at school. He's keen to avoid doing the same to our LO so great to hear that Xavier works in the real world!

I have a couple of family members called Xavier and Javier (different generations) - both are pronounced Havier which is the Spanish pronounciation. I can't say I ever thought of the name as odd, and it's interesting to hear about the French pronounciation.

The only nickname either of them has ever used is really just a shortening - Jav/Xav, pronounced 'have'.

PercyFilth · 13/01/2012 00:36

French Xaviers I have met have been Zav-ee-ay (ay as in hay) or Zav-ee-air, depending on accent (there is only a breath of difference between the -ay and the -air). As this was my first encounter with the name, I always pronounce it the French way in my head.
