How would you spell this name? And what nicknames does it have?

(And do you like it?)

I think I meant Seraphina?

I quite like it but Serafina is the name of the Queen Witch in the His Dark Materials books. This is probably not helpful, sorry.

theladyintheyellowhat · 09/01/2012 21:27

Yes! That's where I got it from ;)

But don't know which spelling is better for a baby who isn't from a novel! :)

My friend's bebe is shorterned to finny/phinney.

tentative123 · 09/01/2012 21:29

Oh yes, spelt seraphina and i love it!

shoobidoo · 09/01/2012 21:31

Seraphina is nicer looking imo.

LittlePandaBear · 09/01/2012 21:35

I think it's pretty spelt Seraphina, it's the name of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's daughter (if that matters to you!)

bookbird · 09/01/2012 22:09

Pretty name, but this would be the issue your DD would have for the rest of her life. "Sara what?" "can you spell that please?".

I work with a Hermione who will be forever grateful to JK Rowling for sorting this issue out for her.

NoHunIntended · 09/01/2012 23:16

I absolutely love love love it. I prefer the Seraphina spelling.

EdithWeston · 09/01/2012 23:19

I think it's lovely, and would spell it Seraphina.

JestersHat · 09/01/2012 23:41

Very nice :) Would use Seraphina spelling.

FriggFRIGG · 10/01/2012 16:01

I love it Smile

SuzysZoo · 10/01/2012 16:18

I don't like it. It sounds very posh. If you are very posh, I suppose it's ok!

Lovely. Seraphina for me - would shorten to Raf / Raffi

angelonthetree · 10/01/2012 16:25

awful. sounds like a real chav trying to sound sophisticated... or like a cheap celeb perfume.... "Seraphina, by Chantelle Houghton"

shoobidoo · 10/01/2012 16:39

angelonthetree, what girls' names do you love? Just curious as that helps understand a person's taste.

telsa · 10/01/2012 17:12

It is very pretty. I know one who is Seraphina - nn Fifi.

squeak2392 · 10/01/2012 17:30

Love it. I prefer Seraphina.

I don't often see either name, but when I see Josefina, I always read it in a Spanish accent. Serafina doesn't sound much different in Spanish, but it does look a bit wrong to me.

If I had a DD Seraphina I would probably call her Serra (NOT pn like Sarah).
Other nns could be Fifi, Sally, Sera, Finn, Fi.

MsMarple · 10/01/2012 17:38

Seraphina is one of my top favourites, but so far DH has vetoed on the grounds of it being a witch's name. Hmph.

I wouldn't want to let anyone shorten such a lovely name, but they will probably do it anyway, to Fi/Fee or Finn/Finny or maybe Raff/Raffy.

Everytime I look on nameberry it seems to be one of the most searched names, so maybe it will be a popular one this year.

angelonthetree · 10/01/2012 19:28

hi shoobidoo, haven't really thought about the names i like TBH, this thread just jumped out as i thought seraphina was so revolting!

BUT - since you ask and now i'm thinking about it! - i like

Esme
Beatrice (Bea)
Elizabeth
Sophie
Eleanor
Poppy
Ivy

A totally different 'type' of name to Seraphina i guess.....

grubbalo · 10/01/2012 22:10

Sorry Angel but to me it doesn't seem that different to your names! Maybe a little more unusual, but I'd say it was within the same ballpark. Am curious now though, (and I'm not asking this in a bitchy way I promise) - what sort of names would you say it is on a par with?

Nellabutterfly · 10/01/2012 22:48

Why is Seraphina/fina being a witch's name a problem? I rather liked the witches in HDM - not exactly warty hags or even new-agey Wicca types - and pretty sure Serafina was on the heroine's side?

I love the name btw - either spelling - although I do slightly prefer Serafina with the F :)

sashh · 11/01/2012 08:09

I know one now, and was a school with one, both Italian both spell it Serafina and nn Fina

angelonthetree · 11/01/2012 10:57

HI grubbalo - to me, and of course just my opinion, Seraphina is in the league of names like Savannah, Chardonnay, Tamika, Gabriella....

Totally subjective really - i just think it sounds like someone with no class who wants their child to sound classy!!
