Indian/Arabic names to go with an English surname?

As the title suggests, I'm Indian/Arabic and DH is English. We already have two DCs called Junaid and Ila (pn Ee-la not Isla) but are stumped for a name for our third. We're already considering the names Afia, Kishori and Kali for a girl and Sanjay, Jai and Vijay for a boy but we don't love them in the way we love our DC's names. What do you think of these names and what others would you suggest?

I really like Kishori and Jai. Sorry can't think of any to suggest.
Ila is stunning btw!

Thank you, we love it! I'm also going to throw Sofia out there but would this sound weird with our other DC's names?

From the girls names, I like Afia the best then Kishori. I think Kali is a lovely sounding name, but would be totally put off by the associations. How about Tanisha or Jyotica?

For boys, I like all your choices, and think Jai is lovely.

lyonheart · 09/01/2012 22:13

I like all of your boys names but my favourite would be Vijay. Favourite of the girls is Afia :)

Aworryingtrend · 10/01/2012 12:33

I like Amina for a girl, we are considering this despite not having links to Arabic heritage.

Of your list I like Afia or Kali for a girl, and Jai for a boy.

I don't like Kali (can be used as a derogatory term in Hindi), but love Kishori and Jai. Not sure about the others, think they are a bit meh. I'm in the same boat, I'm Indian and DH is British. Our DDs are Elina (which means intelligent in Hindi) and Shona (which means fiery). I also liked Bela (fragrant flower) and Tara, but had no boys names.

HurtLocker · 10/01/2012 12:43

Oh, I have remembered Rishi for a boy is nice and means wise man. And I really like Krishan, though it is quite traditional.

alongwayfromhome · 10/01/2012 17:38

Elina is very pretty, but Ila and Elina is a bit of a tongue twister! I don't want anything too traditional really, and like that Sanjay and Vijay can but shortened to just Jay.

What about Lakshmi? I love it, and was on our girls list (I have Indian heritage a fair way back). I always thought it was a girls name, but pretty sure in some instances it is used for boys as well (Lakshmi Mittal?).

BigBadBear · 12/01/2012 10:57

Lakshmi is definitely a girl's name. Lakshman would be the male equivalent. But they are quite religious.

I know a little Amara (half Bengali), lovely name which I think is Arabic. I also like Neha.

Jai is nice for a boy. Or one of the names starting 'Sam'.

shouldnotbehere · 12/01/2012 14:49

I love Sofia.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/01/2012 15:06

Adil for a boy (pronounced Ardel) is lovely so is Adam/Adaham. For girls I like ZamZam but was vetoed in my desire to call my DD that.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/01/2012 15:07

Forgot to finish, I also like Kumarie.

Littlecherublegs · 12/01/2012 16:13

From your list I like Afia and Jai.

Alternatives could be:
Laila
Farrah
Maryam
Zarah

Harris
Jude
Kamal
Zain

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/01/2012 16:18

Or Jamil/Jamail. A really nice, strong boys name.

beatricequimby · 13/01/2012 22:28

If you like Jai for a boy you could have Jaya for a girl. Jai for a boy will be confused with Jay which is quite popular at the moment so he will always be having to spell it (never bothers me though). People won't necessarily get that it is an Indian name though..

I quite like Vijay for a boy, or how about Vikram, Dev or Kiran?

kittensmakemesqueee · 13/01/2012 22:31

I think serriah (sp?) is arabic and it's a name I've always loved for a girl

andypandypuddle · 15/01/2012 09:00

Aliya? Rahima?
