What do people think of this? It's on the list for DD, DH isn't sure but I'm pretty keen! He's worried it's too Germanic (wtf) & harsh.

I love it, it's beautiful.I had a horse called Greta once.

YuleingFanjo · 09/01/2012 17:19

love it.

I like it, but it definitely is Germanic and probably a bit of a Marmite name for that (there are things my DH has vetoed for being too German and he's got a German name!). My friend's mum was called Greta and we always found it a bit exotic and foreign (we weren't the most worldly of kids though!)

My Italian friend has an 18mth old Greta, everyone here was a bit Hmmbut it makes such a lovely change from Martina/Francesca/Annamaria/Maria+random saint name.

Just don't plait her hair and give her a milk churn.

Indith · 09/01/2012 17:23

Lovely, lovely lovely.

miaowmix · 09/01/2012 17:25

Gorgeous name, was on our shortlist too (5+ years ago) but decided against it as too Germanic, which is a crazy reason really.
It's v beautiful actually.

rachel234 · 09/01/2012 17:30

Yes, very Germanic. But it is definately a very old fashioned name in Germany - and not quite granny chic enough to be trendy there any time soon imo.

Babaj · 09/01/2012 17:30

love it! if i ever have a dd it would be up there! i also love freya which is too popular but for some reason this seems like a similar name!

rachel234 · 09/01/2012 17:31

Also, it is pronounced Greh (long eh sound)-ta in German, whereas I've heard it pronounced as Grett-a in English.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 09/01/2012 18:21

Love it.

JestersHat · 09/01/2012 18:49

Not an attractive name IMHO - too harsh.

Marinn · 09/01/2012 18:53

I love it, very chic. Yes it sounds Germanic but those along with the Nordic names make a really nice change to the cutesy sounding names which are popular now.

AlpinePony · 09/01/2012 18:57

5 stars!

I think it's beautiful. Strong sound and not frilly. Go for it!

YummyMummybee · 09/01/2012 19:55

Love Greta!

Gretchen would be a twist on it too

rachel234 · 09/01/2012 21:14

Gretchen is seriously uncool in German, really! And worse would be the English pronunciation of -chen Grin.

ViviPru · 09/01/2012 23:13

rachel234 I can't get my head around that pronunciation, could you suggest a rhyme?

I love it, OP. My Nanny (as in grandma, not CM) was Margaret, she was Austrian. I'd definitely consider it myself.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 10/01/2012 08:14

Beautiful name. I also love Marta.

rachel234 · 10/01/2012 10:26

Vivi, the English would probably pronounce it Grett-tshen, woudn't they? In German it would be more like Greht (long soft eh) chen (with the ch pronounced like the H in huge, if that makes sense). Hope that makes sense Blush.

rachel234 · 10/01/2012 10:27

And I bet your Austrian Nanny was called Margarete Smile.

Mollydoggerson · 10/01/2012 10:30

I think it's a comeback kid and will get trendier and trendier. Brave and bold I like it.

PercyFilth · 10/01/2012 11:11

Long soft eh? Do you mean Grater like cheese grater? [hmmm] I've heard it prn Gretta and Greeter.

I think I would go for Margaret or Margarita, and keep Greta as a pet name. Then she will have alternatives if she doesn't like Greta herself.

ViviPru · 10/01/2012 11:15

I'm really confused now, I thought we were talking about Greta, not Gretchen. Still not really getting it (in spite of lots of German-speaking ancestors, probably turning in graves!)
