Classical names for DD

Our most recent mulling is Calista/Callista nn Callie. DH loves Callie and has suggested this as the long version and I think it might tick our boxes.

My favourite at the moment is Thea but DH isn't keen.

Thoughts on Callista please! Other suggestions welcome (especially for a name that can be shortened to Callie that isn't Calliope :)

I know a Callie but she's Cally.

What about Caroline or Calantha.

You could just have Callie or have it as a nn only.

Not keen on Thea, it seems a very unfinished name imo.

jaffacakehips · 09/01/2012 09:38

Doesn't Calista just have one L?

MmeLindor. · 09/01/2012 09:39

Calista is lovely.

Clarissa is similar.

Prefer both to Thea (perhaps because it is an maiden aunt name in Germany, where DH is from)

Carolyn, Caroline
Callia
Calandra
Calina
Calla (as in lily)

For some reason, and I HAVE just made this up, but Calethea doesn't sound to made up to my ears.

Then you get to use Callie or Thea. but MN are very anti made up names so I shall probably sulk off now...

MrsOzz · 09/01/2012 09:48

It's a REAL name!! Hooray!

I like Callie - not sure about Calista though...not keen on Thea (or Theo or that matter)...

Allthesanityinme · 09/01/2012 11:02

Not than keen on Callie or Calista, not sure why. Thea is quite common I think, although it is a nice name not sure I would describe it as classic. What about Cassandra nn Cassie?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 09/01/2012 11:09

What about Calypso? A beautiful classical name imo.

TheCountessOlenska · 09/01/2012 11:10

I love Calista! (in fact I may nick it Wink)

One of my top names is Clarissa, nickname Clary, which is quite similar.

Other Classical names I like:

Phoebe
Perdita
Ariadne
Helena

GetOrfMoiiLand · 09/01/2012 11:10

I love Calista btw.

ViviPru · 09/01/2012 12:30

Calista is too reminiscent of callous & blister for me - sorry

FlossMacDoss · 09/01/2012 19:29

Thanks everyone :)

Clarissa - doesn't work with our surname - too many s's.

Calypso - beautiful but to me it's an old John Denver song.

Calethea - not sure. Alethea pron a-lee-thea sounds a bit too like a lispy Alicia. But I do like Althea as well so maybe Althea nn Allie (or Thea :o )

Cassandra - quite like Cassie but is it a bit 70's? Also make me think of only fools and horses

Ariadne - love this but would nn Ari be confusing with friends called Harry?

Helena - DD1's middle name is Helen.

Perdita - Like but DH says sounds too similar to paedo Hmm

Phoebe - my best friend's DD

I love Callie too! Same problem :(

If I wanted Callie (I love it, but it's nowhere near the top of my list), I would use Calista or Calanthe (pn calan-thee - someone else suggested Calantha, but I always prefer the -the version of names rather than the -tha).

I don't like Thea, sorry. You could use it as a nn for Althea (al-THEE-ah, not AL-thee-a), Alethea, Theodora... I'm sure there are others. Anthea.

oikopolis · 10/01/2012 18:13

I love Calista, it's really elegant-sounding with a lovely meaning.

I would never name a child Cassandra. The myth of Cassandra is truly horrid.

What about Athena?
Calla is also nice.

DesertOrchid · 10/01/2012 18:14

I second the suggestion of Calanthe.

Or just Calla, like the lily?

Winnie78 · 10/01/2012 19:48

I've an Aunt named Clarice who's known as Callie.

mycatsaysach · 10/01/2012 19:49

bronte

CountBapula · 10/01/2012 20:00

Daphne?

GrimmaTheNome · 10/01/2012 20:12

I thought it was Callisto - one of the moons of Jupiter is named after the Greek nymph of this name. Guess Calista is an alternative but surely Galileo was right? Grin
