Anna

Amalia will get confused with Amelie, Amelia, Emilia etc

Sandy and Wendy are a bit 1970s as main names. Alessandra/Alexandra, Gwendoline are fine though. I think.

Amaya is very pretty, lovely idea.

redrubyshoes · 09/01/2012 12:31

Anna

BlueIvy · 09/01/2012 12:38

Anna. Lovely, simple, classic

HappyAsEyeAm · 09/01/2012 12:54

I know a gorgeous Amalia - when I first heard it, I wasn't sure. Thought it was a bit "Armani-a" and a bit of a mouthful. But now I really like it.

But I prefer Anna from your list.

Polkadotfanatic · 09/01/2012 13:32

I like Anna. Wendy and Sandy sound a bit middle-aged to me. (At the risk of upsetting anyone).

rachel234 · 09/01/2012 15:13

Anna and Amalia are very 'now'.

Sandra and Wendy are associated with the middle aged generation but that doesn't make them 'bad' but merely 'unfashionable' names. I actually think Sandra sounds very pretty, works well in most languages and a little Sandra will not only not have to share her name with lots of others but she will also have a very 'cool' name as an adult (by which time her generation of parents will regard it is a trendy granny chic name Smile. Go for Sandra!

ReneeVivien · 09/01/2012 21:15

I like Amaya, but prefer Anna.

DavidMitchellsWife · 09/01/2012 21:38

I love Sandy and Wendy! It would warm my heart if i met new babies called either of those names.

shoobidoo · 09/01/2012 22:30

Agree that Anna has the most 'modern' feel but there are a lot of them (including my own dd Annabel who mostly goes by Anna).

I think Sandra is a lovely choice and agree that it would very special on a little baby girl - people would soon associate the name with her and lose any 'middle age' associations.

Littlecherublegs · 10/01/2012 10:27

Another vote for Anna! Smile

PercyFilth · 10/01/2012 11:21

Amalia is a European version of Amelia, as is Amalie. Not made up. Much nicer than Amelia IMO, but I wouldn't choose it now because of the popularity of Amelia.

Anna is genuinely a timeless classic, and travels well.

Wendy I dislike - this really IS a made-up name, and horribly twee when you see its origins! :o

Sandy is nice as a pet name, but I would always bestow the full name. Sandra will be more unusual than Alexandra and Cassandra - come to think of it, Sandra probably derives from those names.

rachel234 · 10/01/2012 11:57

Percy, what do you mean with 'European'? Isn't the UK part of Europe Hmm.

rachel234 · 10/01/2012 11:58

And, by the way, I like Amalia and know a lovely German one. Also like Sandra very much.

PercyFilth · 10/01/2012 12:18

I meant mainland Europe. Non-anglophone Europe.

OP, my DD is called Amaya

We really loved the name insantly and it was her name before she was even born.

We call her May-May (hence my MN name) or just May for short.

Just wish I had a name I loved as much as that one to call DS when he is born in April.

I know 3 others but not directly.

I like Amalia, reminded me of DD's name actually

On the flip-side my Mum is called Wendy so its a Mum's name to me, as is Sandra.

babyincubator · 10/01/2012 13:00

Adore Amalia - was top of my list if DS had been a girl - although we might have used this spelling: Amalyah.

What about Ariana ?
