Léonie

Obviously Leo or Leon are boys' names, but I recently came across a girls' version - Léonie (French) or Leonie. Actually the origin is Greek.

Do you think it is a good name for a baby girl?

I love this name :o although school teachers never know how to pronounce it, which becomes really annoying. I would also spell it with out the e on the end so Leoni...but that's probably because Leoni is my name :o

t was quite popular in London in the 80s, weirdly.

Nice name.

People often think it is my name. there is a mum at the primary school my youngest 2 go to that is called it, Its not one I would use but nor one I think ewww over

OhFraktiousTree · 08/01/2012 16:18

I really like it.

DesertOrchid · 08/01/2012 18:16

With the accent I would pronounce it like A&E with an L. (LAY-uh-nee)

I know one who says it that way. With accent that would make more sense with standard French pronunciation anyway, I think?

"Are you looking for a Greek name?"

Not necessarily bbaloo. The baby will be mixed Slavic/Western European (so Greek names are relevant), but we are not limiting ourselves to any particular culture, just maybe trying to avoid culture-specific names that are not relevant to us. I mentioned Greek origin of the name Leonie, because having asked people in rl several mentioned it being a french name with Latin origin (from Leo) and, apparently, it is not. Although nowadays Leo and Leon are pretty much interchangeable.

I am also contemplating all the cute lioness/lion cub toys and a strong image of a powerful animal (and groups of lionesses hunting and looking after the young together). I just like this whole package - sound of the name and what it can represent.
