To think this name is actually quite cool?

DD's first day back at pre-school today and there was a new little boy called Van/Vann (not sure on spelling). At first I was a bit Hmm but the more I thought about it the more I liked it, I think it is actually quite a nice name - sounds good with a nice surname too.
Friend whose DC's go to pre-school was gobsmacked and whispered, once outside the gates, 'Why not just call him Truck or Lorry?'

Not even pregnant, but think it will be going on my 'boys name list' that I mentally store Grin

Love Van - but I'm a big fan of short strong names!

RoughShooting · 06/01/2012 19:27

Laurie (sp. Lorry?) is a cool name too!

Miette · 06/01/2012 19:27

Maybe he was named after Vans shoes. I've heard of people giving kids brand names before.

QuintessentiallyShallow · 06/01/2012 19:29

Could he be Norwegian?
Vann means water. Venn means friend.

It would be very interesting if he was Vann White, as vannvidd means utter madness.... Quite apt, perhaps?

DeWe · 06/01/2012 19:33

Are you sure that your dd didn't mishear? I told my dm there was a boy called "Instrument" at preschool. His actual name was Vincent. Grin

What a stupid response from your friend -
Friend whose DC's go to pre-school was gobsmacked and whispered, once outside the gates, 'Why not just call him Truck or Lorry?

There is already a name Lorry, spelt Laurie. sigh

Kayano · 06/01/2012 19:35

Van Wilder.

CheerfulYank · 06/01/2012 19:36

I know a Van who is really Donovan. And I had a great uncle who was always called Van as his surname was VanSickle. I'm not entirely sure what his real name was . Confused

choccyp1g · 06/01/2012 19:36

Van(n) is a great name.

Ho ho to Instrument, my DS insisted that his friend's new little sister was named "medicine". Turned out to be Madison.

WhiteTrash · 06/01/2012 19:43

I like it, but then my baby is named after a car (well, named after a person who was named after a car) so I guess I would. Although a vehical 'van' was not what automatically sprang to my mind.

giantfrillypigpants · 06/01/2012 19:44

I went to school with a girl whose brother was called Laurie. Lorry I thought.

usualsuspect · 06/01/2012 19:44

I like it

KateShmate · 06/01/2012 20:00

Just to clear it up a bit - definitely not mis-head from DD. The boys name was on the 'name board' and we came in after Vann and so the pre-school lady introduced DD to him

Van?....Van?...Are you kidding. Too modern for me Wink

mrsmaltesers · 06/01/2012 20:23

Love that name. Also love Diesel, who my son had swimming lessons with once.

FlightRisk · 06/01/2012 20:25

hahahaha not preganat but have a boys name list

I do this, don't really want any more children but I have Fallon for a girl and Sawyer for a boy on my list. (Just in case)

Smellslikecatspee · 06/01/2012 20:26

Read this earlier, wandered of to do the stuff you have to of an evening, but I have to say the more I've thought about it the more I like it.

Short snappy, fit any walk of life I really really like it Grin

Dysgu · 06/01/2012 20:38

I love it! I had a colleague when I taught in the USA who had a son called Van. AFAIK, that was/is his 'real' name.

Had one of the DDs arrived as a DS, our top boy's name was Evan (after my DM's dad) and would have had nn of Van.

minouminou · 06/01/2012 20:38

I like it.
I hope his surname is der Graaf generator.......

No, I do like it. I reckon it's short for summink, though.

troisgarcons · 06/01/2012 20:42

Van is a Hebrew name - we usually extend it to Evan or ian

southeastastra · 06/01/2012 20:44

don't like it myself - reminds me of an old boss Grin

marriedinwhite · 06/01/2012 20:46

I think I have heard Scandinavian au-pairs refer to boys called Van. I quite like it. Have heard far worse, anyone remember: Brooklyn and Romeo?
