Does Fifi or Bee work?

I don't like Pheebs. Will this be inevitable?

Why on earth do you need to shorten Phoebe - it is easy enough to say imo.

MamaLazarou · 06/01/2012 14:32

Fifi is as long as Phoebe and sounds almost exactly the same. Can't you just call her Phoebe?

OhBuggerandArse · 06/01/2012 14:33

I like Bee.

bluesky · 06/01/2012 14:34

Bee is cute, but all the Phoebe's I know just end up Pheebs.

poppydaisy · 06/01/2012 14:47

I actually think Fifi is harder to say than Phoebe. Bee is ok but would be a shame to shorten such a lovley name to a letter sound imo.

I teach three Phoebes. Two have managed to remain Phoebe but the other, to children only I must stress, is known as Flobs!

guinealady · 06/01/2012 21:22

Bee or Beebee (at least when DD is little) are very pretty nicknames. Agree that Pheebs is not nearly so nice!

BeattieBow · 06/01/2012 21:24

mine is either Fifi, Fee or Bee but that's just in the family

I think no one else (at school etc) shortens it at all.

pranma · 06/01/2012 21:37

The only one I know is called Fobs at school!!

JestersHat · 06/01/2012 21:46

Bee is nice. Fifi is a miniature poodle's name. I expect many Phoebes end up with Feebs as nickname though.

exoticfruits · 06/01/2012 21:53

I wouldn't worry-she will choose her own-it is pointless trying to work out nicknames, you have no control. Stick to Phoebe.

Lancelottie · 06/01/2012 21:53

Beefy or Feeble, according to the only one I know.

BuntyPenfold · 07/01/2012 00:03

Beefy, unfotunately.

yellowraincoat · 07/01/2012 00:04

What's this MN thing of trying to come up with nicknames before the child arrives? Don't nicknames just come along naturally?

butterfliesinmytummy · 07/01/2012 00:13

It's so twee choosing a nickname - the whole point is that they evolve naturally. I like Phoebe and think that if you choose a nickname, another naturally evolved one will come along anyway. Personally can't stand choosing one name and then choosing a derivative - why not just choose one name? Confused

GroovyRach · 07/01/2012 00:27

I know a little phoebe. She is 6 and her friends call her 'pheebs and fifi'

To me she is 'phee-bee-boo'. Not such a nickname, but more my pet name for her Smile

Lindor · 07/01/2012 00:31

the only one I know is called Pip by all her friends

mathanxiety · 07/01/2012 02:36

I know a Bibi who started off as Phoebe. Bibi was a mixture of Phoebe and Baby mispronounced by her older sister as a toddler.

DD2 knows a pair of sisters who are 'Sofa' and 'Phobia' (Sophie and Phoebe).

yawningmonster · 07/01/2012 05:11

Our dear wee friend is Fee. Unfortunately that does translate to alot of adults assuming her name is Fiona rather than Phoebe

nooka · 07/01/2012 05:31

yellowraincoat I think it's more that people worry about choosing a name they like with a common nn that they aren't so keen on. So knowing that there are alternatives is reassuring. No guarantee that your prospective ds/dd's friends might not opt for the nn you don't like, or indeed that they themselves might like it, but still good to know it's not inevitable.

BeattieBow · 07/01/2012 08:36

my ds called his sister Bibi for ages - we all started using it too. Unfortunately it progressed to Beebles too. No saying what her nickname will end up being - I suspect it is school friends who will determine this, although she will have some very strong views. i don't like Pheebs either, and one of my adult friend insists on calling my dd this!
