Dave!?

I'm 24 weeks pregnant with my first baby and they said at the 20 week scan that it's a boy. DH and I had huge amounts of inspiration when it came to girly names but all our ideas for boys names feel a bit bland.

I'd like to name him David after my (late) dad, but is this cringeworthy? Will it remind everyone (especially my DM and DGM) that he is dead and make them sad/hate the baby?

We like names that are from the Old Testament or are in general use in the UK because DH comes from a Muslim background and I come from a Christian background.

Other names and possible middle names on our tiny list are:
Jacob
Zachary
Noah
David
Isaac
Benjamin
Zain (DH likes this, I think it's too 'cool' with one direction and all!)

Also surname starts with an N.

Any suggestions, ideas or thoughts?

How about David as a middle name?

Benjamin David N....
Isaac David N...

Or Daniel is a Hebrew name too.

Littlecherublegs · 05/01/2012 18:07

I think David as middle name would be lovely - nice name and with the family connection, it would be a fitting tribute.

From your list I like Zachary best.

Why would your family be upset about your son named after their loved one, or was there rancour they don't want to revisit? Confused
DD named after DH's Nan, who died just before I found out I was pregnant, popular decision in his family.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 05/01/2012 20:21

David is a great name and reasonably unusual these days. The rest of your list is ok but ten a penny.

JestersHat · 05/01/2012 21:41

David is a nice classic name and it would be a fitting tribute if you used it, IMHO. Also like Jacob, Zachary and Isaac from your list.

nooka · 06/01/2012 05:02

Naming a new child after a dead relative might cause pain to those that loved him. Or they might think it is a lovely tribute. You just need to ask. My aunt died when she was thirty, pregnant with her second child. My sister thought about using her name for her dd, but we thought that my father would find that very difficult indeed.

MrsJamin · 06/01/2012 05:49

I think David would work as a middle name like others have suggested. How about Daniel, Caleb, or Levi? Love a biblical name myself!

3boysgirlontheway · 06/01/2012 09:30

David is a lovely name as is Dave. I don't think I have heard of a baby called David since "baby David" in the Royle family.

suburbandream · 06/01/2012 09:38

David is a great classic name, it's also one of those names that's often used in other languages. The young Davids I know are Spanish and French.

namechangetoreply · 06/01/2012 11:02

My baby is called David and although I am somewhat biased, is extremely cute and easygoing. It is a beautiful name.

SubordinateClaws · 06/01/2012 11:16

Please, anything but Noah!

lilibet · 06/01/2012 11:27

I have a David and it's so uncommon these days. There isn't another one in his (quite large) year at school.

I thnk your dad would be thrilled as would the rest of your family. Talk to your Mum and Grandma about it to make sure but if you do, you really won't regret it.

Itsallgonetitsup · 06/01/2012 11:32

David is lovely and quite rare these days for kids. All the Daves I know are middle aged me.

Go for it.

Mi4 · 06/01/2012 11:35

David is lovely and I know of one who is almost 1 locally so it is still being used nowadays and won't be seen as dull or old fashioned.

How about Danyal? - believe that is the Muslim spelling of Daniel?

BeattieBow · 06/01/2012 11:40

I think David is ok actually - lots of Dave's in my generation.

Dave is quite cute - have you read Dogger? the little boy in that is called Dave.

Mi4 · 06/01/2012 11:42

Davie/Davey as a nn is very sweet :)

nursenic · 06/01/2012 11:42

A friends boy has a middle name-'Dov' which is short for 'Dovid'.

I know a lot of Daves, but none of them are children and I do think it is a nice name.

Perhaps like some of the other posters have said you coud use it as a middle name? I think that both Benjamin David and Isaac David flow nicely and I know that Isaac goes with a surname beginning with N as that's what we have Smile

I quite like the Welsh variant Daffyd

AriesWithBellsOn · 07/01/2012 13:01

Dafydd not Daffyd.
