Ideas for normal names that are a bit different?

DP and I are expecting another DC and are completely stuck for names. We already have 2 DS called Eric and Flynn and and a DD called Lana and we're really struggling for a name that fits the normal but a bit different criteria. DP is Irish so the DCs have an Irish surname so we were thinking maybe along those lines? But even then we have two very short shortlists and we don't love the names. What do you think of these and would you be able to suggest anything similar?

Seamus (love nn Shay)
Marcus
Fergus
Alexander

Maeve
Nora
Lydia
Naomi

Why not just Shay?

Shay Given Wink

patsdeadfrank · 05/01/2012 17:07

yonk... (steals maeve for her ever increasing list).

ChocolatEtVin · 05/01/2012 17:44

Seamus is nice, Fergus and Marcus are very nice and I quite like Alexander (depends on nns though). How about Theodore or Leonard (Theo/Ted/Teddy and Leo/Leon/Lenny).

I love Nora, the others are okay. Sorry hopeless at suggesting girls names but how about Aurora, Tamsin or Camille?

Littlecherublegs · 05/01/2012 18:17

Love Shay and quite like Marcus.
How about Ciaran or Connor?

From the girls, I like Lydia best.
Alternatives could be Niamh, Roisin, Caitlin?

I love Shay [know a lovely man with the name]but all your boy names are lovely
I also like Naomi but not Nora. :)
Roisin [nn Rosie?]

Alexander is definitely the most versatile name (and the nicest sounding to me). I can't imagine a baby called Marcus.

Please don't use Maeve! I know someone called that and they're forever having to explain how to pronounce it.

I loved Claudia but dh hated. Not sure if it would go with an irish name.

We ended up with Natalie. Only 25 named this in Scotland last year but not weird.

If she'd been a boy I'd we'd probably have gone for Michael. I love it for the same reason I like Natalie. Also has great nn potential.

Nora is beautiful & timeless.
Norma is perhaps another alternative seeing as all the old names are making a revival. Personally I love Norma very unusual.

I really like Natalie and Claudia, they're lovely. I also really like Ciaran.

We have a Shay, not short for Seamus, and we're glad we didn't go with Seamus as I don't see the point in giving a child a name they're never going to use. The only thing I would say is that the other week I did meet a little girl called Shae so it might be going down the unisex route.
I also really like Fergus, Maeve and Nora. Oh and good luck choosing :)

JestersHat · 06/01/2012 20:34

I like Alexander, Ciaran, Lydia and Naomi.

How about

Megan
Abigail
Juliet
Sadie
Rebecca
Elise

Owen
Aidan
Jonathan
Matthew
Ciaran
Elias

JestersHat · 06/01/2012 20:35

Doh, how did I manage to suggest Ciaran again? Confused (must be a good choice!)

YokoOhNo · 06/01/2012 20:51

Fergus is very nice. Love it. Nora is nice - very James Joyce.

For girls, I like Orla. A lovely Irish name, short and easy to spell, with none of the English pronunciation issues of other traditional Irish names.

Seamus (love nn Shay)
Marcus
Fergus
Alexander

Maeve
Nora
Lydia
Naomi

I love all of the boys' names, especially Marcus and Seamus. For Alexander I love the nns Ali, Sandy and Xander.
Alternatively how about Stan, Dexter, Nicolas, Sid, Aaron or Henry

Nora and Lydia are my favourites from your girls list, although I would be tempted to put Eleanor on the bc for Nora.
Alternatively how about Gabriella, Elsa, Poppy, Matilda, Ines, Fionnuala (if you're wanting to go all out Irish!) or Tamsin?
